Default HELP. overflow bubbles and occasionally overheats.

Hi. I have a 04 pt cruiser that started overheating about a month ago due to the radiator having a leak. I replaced the radiator and the problem went away till recently. When driving it will occasionally bubble from the overflow when I come to a stop. But it always bubbles after I turn it off and spills coolant from the overflow. I've replaced the cap, the thermostat, and the upper and lower hoses and still the same. Recently the temp started to rise. I've replaced the coolant it leaked and have also "bled" it. Also I always check the fan both before and after it overheats and it does come on. I thought it might be the head gasket , but there's no water in the oil or vice versa and the vehicle runs good. Sorry for the long post but hopefully you guys can help me out. I also had the water pump changed when the replaced my timing belt.

Check for a bad head gasket anyway...they will blow without mixing any fluids.

Does it overheat also overheat at high speeds or only low speeds?

When the engine is cold, where is the coolant level in the tank, relative to the hot and cold level marks?

It only overheats at low speeds and idle

The coolant line is in the middle of the hot and cold marks

Seems like you've done everything except check the fans to see if they're working. Or did you do that and just not mention it? I'd check the fans and the relays. Are you sure you got the correct pressure cap? And if you are sure of that, check the hose going from the thermostat housing neck to the overflow jug. A hole or crack in one of them and drive you apeS%*t.

I would suggest doing a coolant compression check. You need to make sure the coolant system is sealed to keep the coolant temperature down.

Have you checked the little coolant hose from the radiator cap to the reservoir tank? If its leaking it will put air in the coolant system. Chuzz, I see you beat me on this one.

Just to be sure the low speed radiator fan is working, start the engine cold, turn on the A/C and see if the radiator fan comes on automatically.

Does there seem to be air in the coolant system after it overheats?

Thanks for the reply guys.
When the vehicle would start to overheat I would pull over and check to see if the fan was blowing. Which it was. BUT. I just checked the cooling fan. And it does not come on. I turned the vehicle on and turn the ac on. And nothing happened. Only when the temp gauge got about halfway did it turn on. Is this my problem?

Yes, you need to check your fan relays...1 is high & 1 is low.
You can switch them to see if it's a bad relay or a bad fan.
If you switch them & the fan comes on with the A/C, then buy a new relay, if not...you need a new fan.
ptcruisersteve and chuzz like this.
