Default PO344, timing, rough idle?

I had this car worked on for a head gasket last year and it's been one thing after another since BUT....I'm starting to think the mech. may have blew the timing putting it back together.

Anyway to check w/o tearing it down? Got the top cover off but can't find a mark for crank. Lots of searching on here but can't find reference to it with the balancer in place.

It's throwing 344 codes and a new one didn't do anything. It idles rough and looking back....I think it ran better with the blown head gasket.

Is this issue on your 2003 GT Turbo?

This is the only image I have.

PTCRUISERSTEVE is correct your going to have to take it apart to confirm timing.

Some members have had wiring harness & wiring problems going to either the camshaft sensor or the crankshaft sensor. I would suggest you take an ohm meter and start checking for a bad wire going to the sensors. I would suggest putting the original camshaft sensor back in the PT Cruiser and start checking the wires.

Remove number one spark plug
Insert long wood rod turn engine tith wrench till rod gets tomthe highest point then see if timing markes are where they belong

I put it back in....sure don't see anything. Wiggled a bunch of wires.
Gotta get to both ends to check ohms....don't I?
I don't know diddly about meters, except they check electrical stuff.

crazy they didn't put a pointer on the balancer.
Every other vehicle I've had...did.
Yes, even though they're electronic controlled.

Aren't these pistons domed?
Feels like that rod is sliding down the face some.

looks pretty close though.
hmmm, not far off enough to say it's worth tearing off the whole side anyway.
*@#^. Hoping to see something wrong. Especially with other posts calling out rough idle to bad timing.

I would suggest using a vacuum gauge for reading, if the belt is off a tooth it will reflect in either a very high idle HG or very low.

An engine that is in good condition will idle between 16-18 steady on most 2.4 engines.

Post what you find.
