Default Whining Engine Noise 2002 PT Cruiser 2.4 DOHC

Hey All,
My daughter is having an issue with her car. It's an 02 PT Cruiser 2.4 DOHC non turbo 140k miles. After it warms up it whines, sometimes pretty loud. Its directly proportioned to the engine speed. Doesn't matter what gear the tranny is in, no slipping, fluid looks good. It doesn't matter if the car is moving or not. It doesn't change at all when you turn the wheel and doesn't sound like the power steering pump. It's not a serpentine belt slip. Alternator is charging good. Sounds like it's coming from the timing belt area. The timing belt has around 50k Mike's on it. You guys got any ideas??

Take the belts off one at a time and see if it gets quiet. Being that they are all in the same area its difficult to just listen and determine which bearing or belt is bad.

easiest would be to remove thw accessory drive belt. then you can determine if it is a timing belt system or the alternator, ac and power steering.

My '01 with less than 65k miles on it had the idler going out when I had the timing belt changed.
Follow the steps given for the external belt and if the noise doesn't go away, it might turn out to be the idler or tensioner for the timing belt causing it.

UPDATE not the accessory drive belt or anything it turns. It has gotten louder and sounds like the tranny is starving for fluid. That makes sense since it now doesn't start the noise until you drive it, even when the car us at operating temperature. No slipping or hard shifting still. I believe the torque converter has partially come apart, blocking the fluid intake through the filter. Hopefully I caught it before the tranny is completely toast. No way to tell but to drop the pan and take a look. May still rebuild the tranny over 150k and metal isn't a good mix. Any thoughts?

It wouldn't hurt if you could get a scanner tool that reads the transmission codes to see what codes come up.

How about just trying a trans fluid and filter change? Does the fluid look foamy on the trans stick after the car warms up? If so, you may have a slight leak in a hose that's sucking air. IDK, I'm not a mechanic. Just making a suggestion.
