Default Broken odometer button - is it just a switch or a switch/knob?

Mine came like this from having picked her up. If it's a switch, that's no big deal. If not....depends if it's simply the shaft or the component itself that's broken....

How do the hell do you do this, anyway?

I don't know for sure, but I'm guessing the plastic shaft depresses a push switch on a circuit panel.

Regardless, is there any of the shaft still intact inside of the hole? If so, depress it with something round and skinny that fits in the hole.

One quick press switches to a setable odometer, a second press shows the overall miles on the car. In the setable mode, if you then hold the shaft down for 2-3 seconds, it will reset the ODO to 0.

If made like the North American models, the button is just a plastic rod that pushes a small flat switch on the cluster circuit board.

Here's some photos of a 2003 GT instrument cluster that I took apart. It will be very similar to your 2001 NA cluster. You can see the rod in the first photo and the flat switch on the circuit board in the second. If your switch just appears physically broken, chances are that you just need to replace the rod in yours. But you will have to take the cluster all apart to do this.

A better choice might be to just replace the entire cluster with one from a salvage PT. If like the North American models, a 2001 thru 2005 cluster from a non-turbo PT with the same transmission (auto/manual) should likely work. However, the odometer reading is stored in the cluster. So it will read the mileage that was in the salvage car.

Gotcha, perfect info...over and above guys!

It's just a standard microswitch, so even if it is damaged I can easily resolder in a new one within a minute or two. I'll see how the thing was retained first and see whether I need to turn an acrylic rod on the lathe or weld on some sort of tab to stop it falling out.

I've got an indicator bulb to replace in there too, so whilst I'm at it I might replace the cheesy transparent left/right arrows with some chrome jewel lenses and LEDs. After all, "what not?".

Glad to help!

I suggest you replace all the dash bulbs while you're at it. LED's are pretty snazzy, too.

BTW, in case you don't know, when you remove the gauges, don't turn them upside down (for any length of time). You'll mess them up.

There's a good write up somewhere here on the forum about replacing the bulbs. I'll see if I can find it for you.
