Default Rear oil leak near transmission.

Hello,

I'm from England and new to the forum. I have recently acquired a 2005 Limited Automatic with 2.4, just over 60,000 miles and mainly main dealer service history. I have been searching the forum and found it an excellent source of information.

Here's my problem. I have developed a slow oil leak at the back of the engine by the transmission. I discovered oil on the ground and when I checked, there was oil all over the power steering hose, the corner of the block with the large hole and all over the plate that bolts to the bottom of the oil pan next to the transmission.

I completely cleaned the area and then took a 5 mile journey. On return I found that there was only a small drop of oil in the corner of the block with the large hole. It had seemed to have originated from the front of this corner as above the corner was completely dry.

I have read about the oil pressure sensor going bad, but it's not originating from this area. I've also read about the rear main seal, but I'm not sure if it's the oil pan gasket. Also there is an unknown bolt in front of this corner and I don't know if the leak is from there.

I look forward to any help on this problem. Thank you.
I have uploaded two pictures, the area completely cleaned and then after the 5 mile journey showing the oil had leaked.

I'm not really a mechanic, but the first thing I'd do is make sure all of the oil pan bolts are tight. Then, I'd check the valve cover bolts.

If not the oil pan gasket, then it could be the oil pressure sensor. Mine was leaking.

Thanks for the help so far.

Here are some pictures of the Oil Pressure Sensor. Not sure if it's leaking as I can't see any oil drops.

I'm thinking the leak could be coming from the seal between the Cylinder Block and Bed?

Doesn't look to me like the OPS is leaking at all. BUT, I seriously doubt that there's a head gasket leak, if that's what you're referring to as the bed (engine block). I'm still thinking it's a leaky valve cover gasket and it's dripping down.

Thanks for the help. I will check the valve cover.

As for the "bed" area of the block, The block seems to be in two parts. These parts are factory assembled and I though the leak maybe coming from the seal.

I found this picture on the forum - the seal I think maybe leaking is the area being pointed out by the wooden stick.

Hi,

I took this photo today from underneath the car looking up at the back of the engine. To me, it looks like a possible stream of oil from the top heading down.

Could this then be the valve cover leaking? I'm due to perform a tune-up, so maybe this would be a good time to change the valve cover gasket.

That's very well what it could be. What about that torn hose in the front, right hand side of the picture? What the hell is that?

Thanks for the reply.
I had a closer look today, took some more photos and it seems that there is a stream of oil running down the back of the engine from the valve cover. I will get this gasket changed.

That torn part on the right of the photo is, I think, the exhaust shield for the Catalytic Converter. I think it's in two halves - a top and bottom. I've seen it like this on a Chrysler Voyager.

Okay, good to hear. Take your time with the valve cover and be sure to torque it to spec. I don't know what the specs are, but I'm sure you either have that information or someone else will let you know.
