Default Transmission range sensor

When I put my 2003 pt cruiser in gear, you can feel it go into gear. Reeve the engine just a bit and it starts to move, and then stops and won't move another inch. It does this in all 3 forward gears also. I have read information on the transmission range sensor, and some people on this forum have said that it could be the range sensor causing my problem. I talked to a dealer mechanic, and several transmission shops, and they all say that is not possible. However I tend to lean toward someone who has had a similar problem and their experience of replacing the range sensor and that fixed the car. I have read other research about the range sensor causing this problem. Who do I believe? i would like to test my range sensor but I can't seem to find a diagram of the pin outs, and what pins are reverse, forward, and ground. Does anyone have this information?

This is for an 41TE Electronic Automatic Transaxle (EATX). Check to make sure this is what you have in your PT Cruiser before using this data below for reference.

TRANSMISSION RANGE SENSOR (ATX) - DK. GRAY 10 WAY CAV CIRCUIT FUNCTION

1 F20 18WT FUSED IGNITION SWITCH OUTPUT (RUN)
2- -
3 T13 20DB/BK SPEED SENSOR GROUND
4 T54 18VT/PK TRANSMISSION TEMPERATURE SENSOR SIGNAL
5 T41 20BK/WT PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH SENSE (TRS T41)
6 L1 18VT/BK BACK-UP LAMP FEED
7 T1 20LG/BK TRS T1 SENSE
8 T3 20VT TRS T3 SENSE
9 T42 20VT/WT TRS T42 SENSE
10 - -

According to the diagram I see these five from the transmission range sensor goes to the transmission control module.
T41
T42
T3
T1
T54

Does your reverse lamps work?
I would suggest you find a scan tool that will recognize transmission trouble codes.

This link below might help you but the wiring harness might be different on the 2002.

No back up lights. I put it in reverse and stepped out of the car to see if I had back up lights. The car started backing up about 6 inches then rolled forward, backed up and rolled forward, and just keeps doing it over and over. Very strange. What are your thoughts on that? Its like its going from reverse to neutral. I was watching a video on a range sensor for a different car. They showed a diagram of the pins, which were ground, reverse, and drive 1, 2, 3. When you put them in each gear, let's say reverse there would be continuity between reverse and ground. From what you sent I see pin 3 is ground. Which pins are reverse and drive 1, 2, 3,? Also how do I tell which pin is ground and how they count long ways or back and forth?

The manual shows the left and right back-up lamps work through the Transmission Range Sensor (TRS) on the automatic PT Cruisers.

I will answer your question about the which gear goes to which pin later today.

Not much in the range selector.
4 pins make contact with the selector plate that has a plastic
insert to change pin contacts when the shaft is turned (moving the gear selector) on the metal plate changing
the signal path.

Hope you can understand that.
