Default Code: P0420 Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)

This light came on while driving 24 hours ago and has stayed on. This is a 2007 PT Cruiser. A lot of random work has been done on this car in the last year (A/C pump, camshaft sensor, timing belt, fan, electronic relay, engine heads, spark plugs, all underbelts, oil pressure sender/switch). This is the first time this light has come on with this code. My wife noticed it didn't want to accelerate past 65 miles per hour while driving home this evening; she got up to 70, but it decelerated quickly. Strangely when she went to the post office this evening, after she turned the car off and re-cranked it, the light did not stay on (as it comes on during cranking usually) and was off the whole way home.

Wife called one place before I called another. The first place recommended changing the converter all together and that part would be 1400 plus labor. Expensive! Especially on a car that is nearly 10 years old. Said they had bad luck on "after market parts".

I called a second place for a second opinion. They recommended making the light go off and see if it comes back on (of course I had this convo before it started doing the 65 mile per hour bit)

The car has over 100,000 miles on it.

Recommendations? We plan to take it to person 2 on Saturday at the moment. I am /hoping/ to avoid the likely 2,000+ dollar fix.

On one of my PT Cruisers the P0420 code came on about 3 years ago. I reset the code and it came back about six months later. I kept resetting the code and after almost 2 years it was clogged up, You will eventually find that the acceleration gets weaker and it will have trouble going up the hills if it is clogging up.

I would check to make sure your engine is tuned up. Has the spark plugs, spark plug wires been replaced? Getting good gas mileage?

Yes, spark plugs and things were replaced. Relatively good gas mileage.

Thank you for the link. We went and had the code removed (the check engine light went off on its own) to see what happens.

I've Been Reading Your thread, I Just Went Threw This Same PROBLEM On My 07 Turbo Lite My Light Went Out On Its Own Only To have poor acceleration from cat being clogged. Found a hi flow cat for 250$. Installed a o2 antifowler and it's been running strong ever since. I only put 93 octane in it so it seems like a common problem on higher milage cruisers. No bandaid fixes for this code you will have to either replace cat or gut and use a antifowler would be cheaper but not really legal on cars in higher emission states . Keep us posted.
