Default 2007 curiser - tail lights out

Just got home after being told my tail lights were out. here's what's going on thus far:
-hazards work
-turn signals work
-tail lights do not light up when breaks are pressed
-light at top of trunk hatch (what you'd call the 3rd break light I guess?) will light up when breaks are pressed
-parking lights are out

Nothing popped on my way home and everything was working fine last night.
My thinking is Bulbs, connections or fuse, but i'd like a bit of input before i take my car to the shop in the morning before i have to be at work

You didn't say if the parking lights work or not...except maybe in the title.

The TIPM has an electronic over-current stop module device in case there is a short or high current in the electrical brake circuit. I would check both light bulbs and both sockets and the wiring going to both before looking at the TIPM. Make sure there are no shorts.
Some members have had luck resetting the over-current stop module device inside the TIPM at the dealer.

Do you have a trailer hitch on your PT Cruiser?

Also check the back of the tail light itself...they tend to dry out & crack then hold water blowing out the bulb.
All this can be done by you without having to take it to the shop.
The tail light is only held on buy 1 screw, if you don't have a Torx a regular screwdriver will work.

Check the bulbs. Have a 2006 pt cruiser. The tail lights are pretty crappy. and if any moisture gets in there.. lets say a car wash or anything wet. the bulbs more than likely will blow out. and be careful that the screw for the tail light is not rusted out. very fragile plastic lol. quite a few ppl have had that problem where they go out when they get wet or anything simple.

Do not always think the worst when both tail and running lights go out at the same time. 2009 with 92k, safety check on Saturday was good but after driving on some dirt roads on Sunday both running and brake lights did not function. Took both apart and found both bulbs with water in them. Both fixtures have small molding cracks on the back at the top of the bulge (had to look hard to find it, same on both. Verified new bulbs solved the problem, and hot glue to fill the cracks.
