Question P0551 Code

Hi everyone,

I was driving down the highway the CEL came on and the code P0551. Checked the fluid level which was normal and no leaks. The PT 5 spd manual has 122k. The power steering fluid was changed at 70k.

I cleared the code and the light hasn't come back on yet.

Any ideas?

Thank you in advance!

Power Steering Pressure Switch Circuit Failure

Possible Causes:

1. Power Steering Pressure Switch sense circuit is open or is shorted to ground
2. Power Steering Pressure Switch ground circuit is open
3. Power Steering Pressure Switch is damaged or it has failed
4. PCM has failed

I would suggest checking the wiring going to the switch if the code comes back.

Hi,

Thank you very much for you're reply. I've checked all the grounds as was suggested. Cleared the code and the CEL keeps coming on. Next going to replace switch.

Thank you again!!

I'd say no, that number pulls up a Power Seat Switch.

Question Re: P0551 Code

Replaced power steering pressure sensor. When I move the steering wheel about 10 degrees left or right there is a clicking sound. Fluid level is correct.

Any ideas?

Thank you.

could be a bushing somewhere in the anti-sway bar or the lower control arm. with the system unloaded (on stands) does it make the clunk ? My car does the same, and I have the same code.

Front end clunks when turning or acceleration can be one or more of these factors;
loose wheel lug nuts
worn or broken cv joints
worn or loose tie rod or ball joint
worn control arm bushing
loose sway bar or upper strut attachment
worn or broken engine mount
loose crossmember bolts
worn or defective transaxle gears or bearings

I just replaced the switch in my 08 because it was leaking. The switch is not wired up in my model but since it was leaking fluid around the pins and dripping on the ground, I thought it was easier to throw in a cheap replacement from Auto Zone than it would be to find a plug that will fit properly.

After I installed the switch I noticed the same click you described. I Used a long wood dowel as a stethoscope on the switch while my wife turned the wheel. The clicking is definitely coming from the switch / sensor. If It didn't click with the old leaking switch and it clicks now... gotta be a noisy switch. I didn't have anything apart. didn't even take the wheels off.

In my case, since the switch isn't used, I'm going to fill the electrical receptacle in the old switch with high temp RTV and reinstall after it cures. I'll let you know how it turns out.

When you're back under your PT replacing the switch, could you please take a pic and post it, curious to see where the switch is as my PT doesn't have one, others have also posted on here of no switch, thanks in advance.

Ok, I reinstalled the old switch and the clicking went away. I did notice that the orifice (hole) in the end of the switch is much larger in the Auto Zone switch than in the OEM switch. One way to look at it is that if you can hear the click, you can assume that it's working. However, the clicking would drive me crazy, even if it did clear the code. After market junk.

If the leak comes back on my old switch, I will either spring for the OE part or Find a 3/8 x 24 plug, about 1/2 long.

Sorry, can't seem to post a picture. There are several you tube video's on how to replace the power steering pressure switch on a pt cruiser.

With a good flashlight, you can see the switch from under the hood. look all the way back by the firewall and follow the steering linkage down to where rack and pinion hooks up. you can see where the lines from the pump hook up on the side of the neck facing the passenger side. look around the back and you can see the switch. It points toward the firewall and its just above the cross member. It takes a 7/8" socket.

I have a 2005 Limited Edition Turbo PT .... I was driving made a right turn and car engine stalled . Would Power Steering Switch prevent the car from starting back up ? My car has 80,000 miles. Inside has full power when key is inserted but when I turn key nothing happens no noise not attempt to start.
Thank you for any help.
