Default More Fault Codes Than Car Can Read ?

Will a diagnostic tool read more codes than the car's onboard method (ignition key 3X) can read ?

The other day, the engine light came on and was flashing. I immediately pulled over and shut the car off and checked for codes using the 3X ignition method. No codes were reported. I started the car back up and the engine light was off and hasn't come back on for two days now. (?) Would the dealer be able to see what that code was that the flashing engine light gave that I couldn't ?

Thanks,
Mark.

You really need a Diagnostic Scan tool. The key dance is not a very good way to do PCM Diagnostic work.

When you get one come back and report the actual active DTC (s).

Thanks - Had my buddy at the dealer check the codes this morning. It came back with no codes and all monitoring systems functioning correctly.

That being said, hard to say what threw the engine light. I got the flashing engine light after a hard run down the back roads for about five minutes. Buddy thought maybe just blew through some built up carbon that was enough to throw the error, but not long enough to throw a fault code. (?)

Managed to find who the previous owner was (bought it at a used lot two months ago) and want to contact them and maybe get some history on this thing. With all the misfire codes I've gotten, if the previous owner drove it for periods of time with the engine light on (it was a female owner ! ) could possibly have catalytic converter damage.

I'm determined to make lemonade out of this one !

Your buddy may have been right. Sometimes older cars just do this when they are run hard. If the trouble light doesn't come back, I would not be too worried.

And to answer you questions, yes, there are some codes that the 4X "key dance" will not show. And there are a few codes that don't cause the Check Engine Light to stay illuminated, but these are "special" status codes that don't impact vehicle operation such as a mismatched replacement PCM. But the regular engine-related trouble codes should, in all likelihood, make the Check Engine Light stay lit and they should be retrievable with the key dance. In most cases, the problem with the key dance on a PT Cruiser is one of getting it to work and difficulty in accurately recording the codes. Using a good OBDII code reader is more "dummy proof". And there seems to be a lot of dummy in us PT Cruiser owners. At least it's true in my case.

For future issues, there's a really good OBDII code reader on Amazon that's very inexpensive and is often under $20. It does about 80% of what the $100 ones do. This is what I use and I really like it. Here's a link:

Thanks for the link - definitely on my short list of things to get.

I've gotten a bit paranoid to drive this car too far for fear of something happening .... again ! I think for the most part, we've got the majority of the problems worked out. Would just like to go for a straight week without the engine light coming on .... that little "ding" sound is starting to stress me out ! Guess that's the gamble you take buying a 12 year old car off a used car lot ....

Don't know where I would have begun if it wasn't for the guidance of the fine folks on this forum who are willing to take the time to provide insight to those of us who don't have a clue.

#4 response made my face go but I got an idea and decided to go have my coffee and listen to some good music instead of responding to it. :

Mark,
although you have not indicated you may be upgrading to performance level parts this thread can still apply for general information.

Thanks Nitro - No intentions of upgrading anything. Just want it all factory original, and WORKING !

As for my comment about "running hard" .... for me, that is a five minute run at 80 mph ! For others, that may be their daily commute !

Factory set PCM speed limiters are 128MPH so you were going almost the WOT potential of a healthy PT Cruiser.
