Default Heater core replacement. Remove AC?

2005 Base model, naturally aspirated. 5-speed. Red.

Hello all, this is my first post.

I have the telltale coolant smell in the cabin, as well as outside (but mostly inside). It gets worse as the heat is turned up. All signs point to heater core and/or inlet/outlet hoses.

I watched a video on removal, and everything seems relatively straight forward, until it skips the part about actually removing the HVAC unit which contains the blower, heater core, and condenser.

After looking at some other guides, they say to drain coolant system and recover refrigerant. I can do everything except the refrigerant part, because I'm avoiding buying those expensive tools.

I know there are several heater core threads already, but none mention the AC lines.

I definitely don't want to bring it to a shop, but I am not about to release refrigerant into the atmosphere.

What do I need to do?
Thanks.

You can take it to a shop, have them evacuate the A/C, go home , do the heater core and then go back to the shop, at a later date, to recharge the system.

Thank you all for the welcomes! VsandFords, that's a good idea, I didn't think of that. It's the best of both worlds.

Any idea on how much that might cost?

Every shop is different. Possible you have a shop in the area that will do it for less then $100. They will want to check for leaks before recharging.
