Default 2.2 Diesel Turbo Wastegate Solenoid

Hi guys,

First let me introduce myself. Living in Belgium, Europe, 24 yo and electromechanical engineer.

Car: 2.2L Limited CRD Diesel
Year: 2002
Odometer: around 275,000km / 171,000 miles
Nothing modded or tuned

I took over my dad's stock 2002 2.2L Limited CRD Diesel PT about a year and a half ago. Now the last 6 months, it's got a problem that no-one seems to find a solution to. I've been to 3 different garages, spent hours on the phone with mercedes (as the engine is a mercedes), and every fix that's applied amounts to nothing but a lot of spent money for nothing.

Symptoms:
-A lot of black smoke coming from the exhaust when accelerating
-While idling, the revs drop a few tens of rpm every 10 or so seconds, preceded by the car having a little "shake" and audible difference in sound from the engine
-Engine light comes on often, but at random... Sometimes after 10min driving, sometimes after 2,5 hours. Power loss, no turbo sound anymore, won't go over 2800rpm.

Fault codes:
-One that I've never seen myself, but the garage told me the brake pedal intermittantly registers braking when cruising, leading to a disagree between gas and brake pedal
-P0243: Turbocharger Waste Gate Solenoid 1

That last one is the one that seems to cause the problem, as I had this turbocharger waste gate solenoid replaced yesterday, only to have the engine light come on after 10 minutes driving home from the garage. When I got home, the key trick gave me the same P0243 fault code (other codes were gone). I didn't notice the idle rpm drops or black smoke anymore though. So I checked the wire connections & harnesses, they seem fine. The hose that is referenced usually is fine as well (mercedes engineer had me check it already, the 8cm diameter black hose near the front of the engine bay).

Has anyone got any clue as to what this problem might be? I can't find any schematics or service manual for the diesel version, so I'm at a bit of a loss... Faulty sensor or PCM connection?

I'm not familiar with this engine but does the wastegate actuator hold vacuum? If external, is the actuator rod attached to the wastegate flap?

Hi. I recommend to find the PCM pin-out values and check them with a meter to any suspected components related to the error code.
you can try to get the proper data sheet by buying the 'alldata' subscription for a mercedez benz car with the identical engine and the access because the website will not have it for the PTcruiser diesel.

i'm doing work on a mercedes benz and often times the PCM can fail with age and cause strange problems, and not give a specific engine code.
unfortunately only europe market has the diesel engine so not many users here could help you. there is a good pdf manual you can find that should help you somewhat.

i suggest to tackle the error code first. once it has been eliminated and does not return after several drive cycles you can keep on trouble shooting your issue.
