Default What's wrong with my stuttering PT?

Hey guys. I have a 2001 PT Cruiser and Ive been having issues with how my car has been running the past half a year or so. Please keep in mind that this is the first car I've ever owned and I've moved away from my family mechanic that knew how to fix all my problems. In short, I know absolutely nothing about cars.

So here's the issue. My car likes to stutter. When I'm stopped it will stutter occasionally (problem is usually more evident when the A/C or heat is on. Accelerating from a stopped position can sometimes lead to stuttering, and I'll usually just let up on the gas, try again and it usually is fine. This problem also crops up when I hit higher speeds (around 55-60), stutters, let off the gas, try again, and go on my merry way. I'm noticing this becoming more frequent now that it's getting colder as well.

Two nights ago I was going about 60 on the highway and the usual stuttering happened, but my usual quick fix didn't work. It continued to struggle and stutter and struggle some more each time I tried the gas until the check engine light flashed on. However, this lasted only about 30 seconds before the car stops stuttering and the engine light turns off. Needless to say I've been taking back roads ever since.

I've done some googling of this issue and I'm seeing that it could possibly be a fuel pump / filter issue. Though almost every post I've seen have mentioned the car not starting, which I've never had an issue with. So I'm coming to you guys for advice before bringing my car in to some random chicago mechanic and getting taken advantage of because I'm a young girl who clearly doesn't understand cars. Anyone have thoughts on what the problem could be?

If you are going to keep your PT Cruiser and attempt to resolve problem that may time to time crop up, you need to invest in an inexpensive OBDII Scanning Tool.

You will need this for many of the experienced DIY member's on this forum to be able to accurately help solve many problem on your PT Cruiser.

Welcome to the forum.

Harbor Freight offers OBDII Scan Tools for a reasonable price.
Search results for: 'obdii scan tool'

If you have no engine trouble codes I would suggest you try some Chevron Injector Cleaner that is safe for Catalytic Converters. Make sure you follow the directions on how to apply it to the gas tank.

Do you know when was the last time the PT Cruiser had a tune up? Spark plugs and spark plugs wires replaced?

Lets focus on the task at hand.

Early models had issues with the computer that led to the problems you described.

Unfortunately I wont be posting any more in this thread until the OP shares important information about the car like the obvious things you should always do if you want help online. Describe the engine size, transmission, etc

Hi Tori, welcome to the forum. Just as a starting point since you have stated you don't really understand cars that's okay but as a quick check would you cycle the key on to off 3 times just to possibly gather some information for stored vehicle codes that have been logged by the PCM. The codes will display after the third key cycle in the odometer display area. They will begin with a P followed by four numbers, example, P####. It isn't as accurate as a code reader would be but could give us a possible insight into an area to look at until you can have the codes read with a code reader. It might help the members here to give you a good starting point. It's not the preferred method but I'm confident it will show us something.

I should further clarify Tori the cycle is off to on 3 times but not off to start just key off to key on 3 times.

Welcome to the forum. Could you please tell us how many miles are on your PT, if it's turbo or not and automatic or stick? Thanks.
