Default Replaced PCMs are not working

Our 2004 PT cruiser 2.4L broke down, would not start anymore, just crank. Mechanic replaced battery, starter, alternator, then the car ran, but would not charge battery. Mechanic told me car needs new PCM. I ordered new PCM module, car started once, puttered unresponsively, and stalled. From then on, it would not even crank anymore. I put in the old PCM, it would not crank. I jumped the starter relay, the starter works. Incidentally, both the old and the new PCM can not be read by my scanner. I returned the rebuilt PCM and got a other one, still the same symptoms: No cranking, no readout with scanner. Also, the keydance does not work for codes readout. It is as if there is no power to the PCM. Did anybody else experience similar problems? Any idea what I have overlooked. The fuses seem OK, in cabin and under hood. I am clueless.

scoobysnacks420, you are the man !!!! or woman !!! Fuse was blown, and I thought I checked it. Car finally starts up, runs nicely, BUT: battery not charging . Aaaahhh,

That was the reason I put in a new PCM(s) to start with. I was told the charging does not work due to a defective PCM. SO: I am back on square 1, but definitely away from square minus 4. Haha..

Thanks a lot Scoobysnacks420. Wonder if you (or someone else) have another ace up your sleeve.
Alternator is new, starter is new, just the charging does not work !!! Another funny fuse I did nor check ....

The non-charging can be simply due to an open in the signal or ground going to the alternator harness connector. Does your battery light come on ? What is voltage at idle. It is highly unlikely to be the PCM after the same symptom appears across two replacement units.

Not sure if the pt has a fuesable link from alt, but the Neon of the early years would often have problems with that wire and replacement would solve the issue. Its just a guess as ive pulled more wires from a pt then actually diagnosing any electrical gremlins lol.
I know how to test this theory, but am not going to post how, as things can go bad, and i dont want blame for any misshaps.

Where did the replacement alternator come from? I worked for both Autozone and Advance in the past and had alternators from both places test bad, right off the shelf. I made it a policy to bench test every alternator I sold before I'd let a customer leave with it. I had fewer returns, but even then, sometimes they'd come back defective because bench testing isn't the same as load testing one in the car. Take it and have it load tested IN THE CAR.

Excellent question. Got the car towed to a Firstone place, and they were pretty helpful. After installing new battery and starter, they replaced the alternator. Car now started, but no charging of the battery, so they put in a second alternator (2.5 hours each time, I think it is somewhat tricky to change the alt). So, they initially also suspected a bad alternator from the shelf , but discarded the theory after the second one did not charge the battery either. (They charged me only for one alt)

That is how they came up this the PCM theory. They said they measured some voltage at the PCM connector and that was off, hence the computer must be bad.

I have no idea where Firestone buys the parts, I know it is aftermarket in most cases.

Long story short:

Car refuses to start, some "weird blinking" of "all lights" (daughter)
New battery
new starter
new alternator
another new alternator

Result: Now car starts, but won't charge

new PCM
another new PCM

Result: Car starts, but won't charge

No codes in computer, battery voltage 11.8 Volts with engine off, voltage 11.2 Volts with engine on. Battery lamp NOT on initially, but will come on as soon as headlights are switched on or you drive around the block.

Has anybody checked the plug & wires from the alternator..??
A few users have posted that they found a broken wire leading from the alternator.
