Default Code reader? Check engine light

I've been trying to figure out which code reader would work for my 2007 PT Cruiser. I've never looked at these.

Can anyone point me in the right direction? my check engine light just came on. I found one but not sure if it'll work

I did the two tests by cycling thye key and the one holding the odo and going to 'run' neither produced anything usable. the on/off/on/off test shows the dashes, then 'done' then just went back to the odometer. gave me no error code.

Now, i should mention, the other day my gascap light came on. i checked, it was closed, I checked again, it was closed, and the light stayed on... then a day later after make maybe 3 trips it went off.

I saw someone mention that gas cap sensor could set the engine light off, and I'm guessing that's what did it, but since it gives me no error codes I don't know what to do.

if I get the OBD2 code reader would that likely produce the same? it's only $28. this is the one I'm asking about

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B019CDFSO8...=I56EFLMS9RJYM

Finally, is there an easy way to tell if the car is in limp mode?

First I would suggest you get an OBDII Scan Tool. Not a scan reader.

Harbor Freight sells OBDII Scan Tool for a reasonable price.
Search results for: 'obdII scan tool'

If you are getting the code for the gas cap you should check the gas cap for leaks and make sure the gas cap is sealing correctly.

If the light doesn't stay on, it may have been a momentary thing and nothing to worry about.

hrm. this is the title:
Can OBDII OBD2 Car Auto Diagnostic Code Reader Scan Tool

here's a pic it does say ODBII scan tool

Can you see what the difference would be? the one on amazon is a whole lot cheaper, but if it's not the right tool it doesn't matter

I think it's the gas cap to be honest. I pulled the negative cable to reset the light, and removbed the cap then put it back on. but it didn't feel real tight.

I drove down to home depot and back (about 8 miles) and the light didn't come back on. I'm going to replace the gas cap for sure.

Think I need a scan tool too

You can not reset the DTC by pulling the battery connection it only turns off the warning light designed to alert you of a possible issue.. In fact you make solving the problem more troublesome because the DTC is still in pending process!!!!
Gosh I wonder how many times I have posted this on this forum alone?

A quick DIY (shade tree method or home do-it-yourself) way to test a fuel cap is apply grease to the seal and re-install the cap. If the DTC cancels (engine light goes out) for a couple of PCM cycles (complete engine cool down and start-drive) you can bet it is a bad fuel cap.

A none DIY i.e. ASE Auto Diagnostic Technician would pressure test the fuel cap

Best bet as far as scan tools , get one that can read readiness files and live data streams. 5hen you can properly diagnose like a real technician not a backyard mechanic it's worth the extra money. Proper tools always make the job easier. Happy cursing.

That tool works and it is less expensive, but I got the bigger one
Which displays more live data (probably about 1 dozen parameters rather than just for with the small reader), is a bit easier to navigate with more buttons and has a longer cord which allows me to place it conveniently rather than have to put it on my lap while driving around with the short cord on the small unit.

I got it on sale for somewhere around $50.

If you want an OBDII scanner/resetter plus a permanent live parameter viewer, spend a few extra bucks and get an UltraGauge.

It displays and clears codes, but it doesn't translate the codes into English words but with smartphones, you can look them up in an instant.

You can also go cheaper and buy a Bluetooth OBD2 dongle for ~$20 and use an Android phone or get a wifi dongle to use for an Apple iPhone (they don't work with Bluetooth, long story). These work with freeware but are less capable. You have to pay for more features but the full capability is there.

Bought the Autel MAxiscan 300 5 years ago from Amazon and had saved me a lot of trips going back & forth to auto stores.....this should work on your car to pull codes and clear them too.

even had a newer version:

Or you can just get the ELM327 wifi one for more extensive info:
