Default Gauge Cluster Illumination .... BS ?

As best as I can tell, the speedometer is illuminated by four bulbs - top, left, right and needle - same with the tachometer and one bulb each for the gas gauge and temperature gauge.

Needing some work done at the dealer, I opted to have all new bulbs installed. The fuel and top speedometer were burned out, so figured might as well go all new and be done with it for a while.

When I picked the car up, the fuel and top speedometer lights were working now, but .... the temperature gauge, left, right and needle on the speedometer and the top and left bulb of the tachometer were NOT working !

Dealer tells me the trouble is the circuit board. Really ??? How can that be ?

Two bulbs that were not working are now working and bulbs (6 of them) that WERE working are now not !

Personally, I'm calling BS on this diagnosis - just doesn't make sense to me. I could "maybe" understand if the same bulbs that weren't working were still not working, but that isn't the case. What say the experts ?

Thanks,
Mark.

EDIT - After some researching here, it appears as though the dash is illuminated by SIX bulbs - not as many as I initially thought. That being said then, the two that weren't working now are, one that was working still is and three that were working, now aren't. So, they fixed two, and lost three. This is what I currently have ....

The connection where the cluster plugs in is kind of wonky. Chances are that you if remove and re-seat the cluster, it will all go back to work.

PS: Sounds like your mechanic is giving you the "ain't nothing we did" excuse. Don't accept it. Tell them there was nothing wrong with that part of the cluster before and they likely didn't get it seated right. Since this is a dealership, take your complaint to the next higher level if the shop won't comply. Be nice and keep a smile on your face, but don't accept any excuse until they fix it on their dime and not yours. At least this is what I would attempt to do.

I wouldn't try fixing it yourself, if you do, then you've voided any warranty from the dealership. If they don't fix it, then you could find another dealership to have it fixed right, then present the second repair bill to the first shop for reimbursement.

Did you by chance happen to take any "before" pics of the dash, at night, showing exactly which bulbs worked and which didn't? If so, they could be your best evidence.

I would slap the dash and see how many come on. After that i would raise hell.

They probably just hit it like i recommend and then laughed when they all came on. Try it.

Yeah, I gave it a couple good thumps on my way home .... nothing changed.

Are the two plugs accessible by reaching up from below that I could give them a wiggle ? - or are they buried in the dash pocket with the cluster itself ?

now that we have that you abused the instrument cluster in writing, your warranty is now completely void

just kidding. hold the dealer accountable for making it worse after they 'fixed' it.

I don't understand why they won't fix it. I changed mine in 30 minutes.

I don't understand why they gave you the car back: (1) if it wasn't fixed, and maybe needed additional parts, they should have called you and informed you they still had an issue, (2) they gave it back to you, not fixed, but still charged you?

Every time that I have ever used a shop, if they find something else, they always call me with what else is needed, not put it back together and give it back to me with some of the original issues

At this point, I don't know that I would go back to the original shop. I would have paid by credit card and I would file a charge back through the credit card company, then go elsewhere to get it fixed.

But then, there are some that will say that you must give the original shop a chance to rectify the issue that they created.

So it's your choice.

They called me and told me the car was ready to go .... didn't say it wasn't fixed on the phone. When I got there, he informed me the circuit board in the instrument cluster was bad and they would have to look into getting a new one first of the week.

That's were I called BS on them - and told them so.

How could the circuit board be bad if bulbs that weren't working are now working and ones that were working now are not ? Kinda tells me there is nothing wrong with the circuit board. I should have just had them change the two bad ones instead of all six.

I spent three hours last night searching online for this same problem, and nothing for the PT Cruisers. Found cases of complete cluster failure, but not just the illumination. I did find a common problem with gauge illumination for earlier Caravans and Neons where the board had cold solder joints - but not one case for the Cruisers.

Mark.
