Question 2006 Cruiser rough starting and wheel noise

Hi all,

I have zero car knowledge. My 2006 PT cruiser, I've been noticing, when I start it the very first time in the morning, starts up very rough, it's almost like electrical connections aren't 100% being made. It RUNS fine, but it's a worrisome start. I've already replaced pretty much everything except the physical engine itself--timing belt, radiator, battery, starter, all that junk. When it had intermittent starting issues a while back, there was a problem with some wire underneath the car and they had to repair it. Luckily it was simple, but now it's starting up rough again. Tomorrow I will try to record how it sounds and post the video.

Secondly for the first 10 mins or so of driving, whenever I turn my steering wheel I get a grinding whiny noise. Once the car warms up its fine though.

Any thoughts? Thank you in advance.

P.S. over 100k miles on it.

Have you had other belts replaced or just the timing belt? Sounds like belt for power steering is slipping. Rubber is one of the very few things that shrink when they warm up - when belt tightens from warming up, noise stops. Should be worse on cold days.

Check your power steering fluid...it will do that when it's low.

Rough start on cold engine is a common problem and it's usually related to the fuel injectors or the computer. The computer software can be updated to the latest version from the dealer and that's usually the best way to go. I would have them check if there are any updates to install on it.

I would suggest holding off on the computer software update until everything else has been checked. Most of the time it is another component or a wiring problem that is the issue.

Which wire was it that needed to be repaired the last time you had an issue with your PT Cruiser?

1st thing I always do when ever I have a drive-ability issue with any of my OBDII cars is hook up a scan tool and have a look at live data. I know not everyone has a scan tool that can do that, but that's how I do it. With symptoms of running rough when cold my 1st thought is erroneous coolant temp signal so I'd be looking for that. Without a scan tool you can't see the data. If that checked out good, then I'd be having a look at fuel pressure to make sure it's in spec.

Power steering whine is what you described in regards to the whining noise. Low fluid, as others have already mentioned, or worn out pump.

Dad put in a little power steering fluid and now it doesn't whine, but the starting issue is getting worse. Some times it starts fine, other times it almost doesn't start. Really rough and I notice the lights flicker (and car vibrates in unison) til it smooths out, which is also taking longer. I had an oil change, trans flush, and air filters changed last Saturday and when I picked up my car the check engine light, which had been on with code p0456, had turned off. Well it came back on today and this time there are no codes, just a guessing game of Will It Start?. My dad says I can't afford the car to die on me but unfortunately I have paid it off for a year now and I can't afford another monthly payment with my current debt (mostly student loans). I'm going to take it to Autozone after church tomorrow and see what their scanners come up with. If I make it.

EVAP code, small leak...could be a loose gas cap or a few other little things.
This is not going to keep your car from starting or running weird.
I've had a P0456 or P0457 for almost 2 years now without any effect.

Which wire was it that needed to be repaired the last time you had an issue with your PT Cruiser? That same wire might be giving you problems again.
