Unhappy HELP about EGR pipe! My car is knocking weirdly.

Hello,
I am from overseas sorry for bad grammar.
First of all my car is 2001 2.0L PT Cruiser with Auto. 120K miles on it.

I love my car since it had a Head gasket burned.. And my Car mechanic changed all valves, gaskets, sparks and lots of parts which was necessary.
The car should run like new but sometimes it has a weird smell coming from exhaust and while driving it knocks suddenly but not always. For example, when I wait at traffic lights, want to go forward and hit the gas to move, car is like something sucking gas from it. The RPM goes down, instead of going up like any normal car. I hit the gas with full throttle, so it disappears for a while. Car runs rough.
Sometimes Engine Light appears and giving the code P0172. (It gaves about vacuum leaking before but not for now there is only p172)
My car mechanic checked and understand nothing about the reason of it..
After months, today I noticed that my cars EGR pipe does not appear!! I searched and find 2001 auto PT'S has EGR valve.. So I am using my car without EGR pipe on it about 6000 miles or more!!
Is that the reason of my knocking engine and bad fuel consumption with bad smell coming out from exhaust?
What is the harm of using without EGR pipe with open hole??
Thanks for your ideas!
PS. I asked the car mechanic that did you forget to put EGR pipe, and he said it hasnot got a hole there is no EGR at my PT. I did not believe him anyway. Is he right?

According to Google, you have an EGR...so I'd take it back & show him where it's supposed to hookup on the back of the manifold.

Thank you for your response.
But I did not get my other answers?
If there is no EGR pipe on it, what will be the reasons?

My PT doesn't have an EGR, it was dropped from the PT in 2003.
Your gonna have to wait till someone else posts that has one.

P0172 means your cruiser is running rich.

Possible Causes
1 Intermittent Condition
2 O2 Sensor Heater Operation
3 O2 Sensor
4 EVAP Purge Solenoid Operation
5 O2 Sensor Signal Circuit Short To Voltage
6 O2 Sensor Signal Circuit Open
7 Throttle Position Sensor Voltage Greater Than 0.90 Volt With Throttle Closed
8 TPS Sensor Sweep
9 MAP Sensor Operation
10 ECT Sensor Operation Engine Mechanical Problem
11 Fuel Filter/Pressure Regulator (Too High)
12 PCM

A low engine vacuum reading from the MAP makes the computer think the engine is under heavy load such as during acceleration, so it commands a rich fuel mixture in response. A vacuum leak can also result in a rich mixture for the same reason.

Have you considered replacing the EGR pipe if you do have a 2001 engine that requires it? Have you checked with the dealer to see if your engine requires it with the VIN number?

If there is no EGR pipe on intake manifold (so the hole stays open), could that be cause of p0172 error or low engine vacuum and engine knocking sometimes?
Idiot car mechanic forget to put on. And I guess he lost that part!! And PT's are rare in my country. So it will be hard to find that part. FIAT sucks..
Maybe I can as it with VIN to official dealer.

I couldn't find any info if the EGR's are different or not on the 2.0, 2.2, or 2.4L.

PT Cruiser 2.4L EGR Valve & Tube From 2005

that is the same part on my 2002. i believe the year on that ebay ad is incorrect.

1 - they forgot to reinstall it
2 - it's not supposed to be there

i would guess #2. if you had a hole that big in the back of your intake, your car would idle at 3500 rpm.

you need to post pictures of the back of the intake or look for a tube/hole yourself. you should either have a flat spot where it would(but does not) go, or a hole and threaded holes where it is supposed to go, or the tube connected where it is.

you should also look at the cylinder head on the driver side directly below the throttle body and air intake tube. from memory i would guess the EGR valve in my car is 150mm below the intake tube. you will either have a valve there, or you'll see a spot where it should go, or you'll see a spot with un-drilled holes.

i just noticed you updated your first post

I caught that also, since the EGR was removed in 2003.
