Batteries are good. What can cause them both to stop opening?

Does the alarm button on the fobs work to sound the horm?

No and the fuses are fine.

Take your fobs to a place that cuts keys or a battery display in a store, some have a tester that can tell if your fob is sending out a signal.

What are the odds of both going up at the same time?

Who knows, both batteries went in both of mine at the same time. But you need to find out first if the fob is working or not before you start tearing into the vehicle. What year and model PT do you have?

Did you ever find/fix the problem?

My remote started working intermittently, then not at all. Took the fob apart, cleaned everything with electronics cleaner (CRC QD), retensioned the metal battery contacts (especially the one that makes the connection to the main board) and all worked fine after reassembly.

Of course be sure you reinsert the batteries with the correct polarity.

Here's a good video that shows the whole process.
