Default Cooling fan could be possesed ??

I have been searching the forums but don't see anyone that has my exact problem ???

I have a 2006 pt cruiser touring 4cyl. the electric fan seems to be cooling just fine while the car is running but when you turn the ignition off it will stay running ( bad relay ?) but after a bit it will turn itself off , figured maybe it was still reading hot ? but then minutes or hours later for no apparent reason other than demonic possesion it will kick back on and run then repeat for who knows how long. First time it has actually killed the battery though last night.

Anyone have an idea , I really hate to just start throwing money to change parts that will have no effect .

Most of the relays in the fuse box are the same part #. I'd just try swapping the fan relay with one of the others and see what happens. Good place to start. Since you have an 06 model, that's the first year for the TIPM and some of them have had some strange quirks.

The fan relays for 2006-2010 are on the left side of the fan, their are 2 of them.
Check the wiring also, your getting power from somewhere & I'm not sure a bad replay would cause this.

The wires run from the left side relays under the fan & into 2 plugs on the right side corner of the fan (Driver side).

I'm not a big fan of buying stuff without testing, but testing relays is hit or miss.

they may test good and sometimes be bad.
they may test good and sometimes be good
they may test bad and you'll know they're bad.
so even if they test good, it's still a 50% chance they're bad

since you've got a 2006, i would swap them out for peace of mind.
they are cheap, and can be problematic to diagnose. plus on your car it's one of only a few electronic parts you can replace.

i have an after market fan setup i use on my mustang and i was flying through cheap 25/30a relays they have at the local parts stores. i actually have one with a hole burned through the side.

i found a better solution to crappy parts store relays at my local nerd supply store in the robotics/DIY section. they are 70A and made by NTE.

Beuler also makes great relays. search "beuler 40/60" to find them. i see them listed as low as $1.99.

-the relays at autozone and orielly in the yellow and black package are the absolute crappiest of all i've tried so do not buy those. these do not last very long and usually fail by not turning on, so when they go bad your symptom will be when you overheat. when the Beuler relays fail, usually they get stuck on like your current ones seem to. -much better than an overheat, IMO

The left side when you are facing the car with the hood open.
AKA Passenger side for US cars

Original factory fans have removable relays. Many aftermarket fans have hardwired relays. In this photo, the top of the fan is at the bottom of the picture. The wire harness connections sit at the bottom driver's side of the fan when installed.

Actually, the drivers side of the car is the left and the passenger side is the right. Here in the USA! I don't know about other countries. They look at it from where you're sitting inside the car, so no matter where you are, left SHOULD be the left side of the car as you face forward. IMHO

When your relays fail they do not energize. They must get power to the coil to close the contact to power your fan.
Did some one before you do some creative wiring to the relay or harness to make the fans work.
I have worked on some cars that have a warning sticker that the fans may come on at any time.

If not unplug the harness and if still comes on, it is truly possessed.. and would need an exorsism (how do you spell that)

Joe is right.
The fans are wired hot all the time and just need a path to ground in order to turn on. The relay (or a short) will do that. I cobbled together a switch to energize the relay so that I could turn the fan on from inside the car. I energized the relay so that I would need to only run 1 Amp of power to the switch rather than need a 15 Amp switch to power the fan directly. I also did this just as a temporary fix until my fan arrived from Rock Auto.
