Default Top 3 Performance mods

So to date, I have left the engine/driveline of my PT bone stock. With the other upgrades I'm doing cosmetically, I've been thinking about what performance upgrades might be worth doing as well.

I'm looking for feedback on what might be considered the top 3 performance upgrades to a PT with the turbo-lite. I'm not a mechanic but feel fairly comfortable taking things apart as needed.

Suggestions???

The Top#1 is the Stage 1, if you can find it.

Better title may have been..
Re: Top 3 Performance mods that *really work!

Not necessarily the easiest depending on the year and model PT.
1. *Custom CAT back exhaust system
2. *PCM performance Calibration
3. *Gasket match Porting Exhaust

The published (motorbooks) Top 3 Performance mods
1. *Performance Air Filter
2. *Ignition upgrades
3. Available retail manufactured Cat back system

What was found to be the commonly reported Top 3 Performance mods
1. Available retail manufactured Cat back system
2. *PCM Stage 1 or equivalent
3. CAI

Top 3 Performance mods that will get the best bang for the bucks spent.
1. *Custom CAT back exhaust system
2. *NOS wet system
2. *PCM calibrated from Data Logged information.

Didn't think about it, but exhaust is already on the way so there's #1. Sounds like the next two easy ones would be the PCM and Intake.

I see several CAI options on the web. Seems like K&N is a common option. Is it a good one?

Who is a good source for a Stage 1 PCM?

NOT 1 CAI ever offered for a PT Cruiser Turbo Model really increase the engines output by itself. In fact most of them will reduce your engines output at different levels of the RPM range. Most of the increases may have simply been replacing the air filter with an improved flow version? Viewing DYNO info without SAE smoothing reveals the real truth about reports of increases.

Unless you are planning to do HEAD work the stock "un-modified" box and intake hose to the Turbo is really the best.

However... I personally like the look and the air sound of a simple and inexpensive cone air filter and polished aluminum piping. There are dozens of examples of PT's useing these even CREWZIN NA PT Cruiser pictured in a previous response has one.
The loss of maximum engine output is so insignificant it is not worth even mentioning.

If you're getting an exhaust and CAI, do the tune after because those mods generally don't add anything without a proper custom tune. As Nitro said, CAI do not add much if anything and can actually hurt. I have been considering one to get some room for water/methanol injection, but things keep need replacing and I have to work on the house, so...

Per CREWZIN's suggestion, the Stage 1 PCM is the easiest and best way to gain as much as 40 hp with only ten minutes work. And they are very cheap considering what they provide. Just find a core PCM and FWD Performance can flash it to a Stage 1 that will be plug and play in your turbo light. And if your are brave and have the time, Sykes ECM Tuning can add even a little more.

It's my belief that this is the first performance upgrade to make on a turbo light. And this should likely be your baseline when you start adding some of the others suggested.
