If I remember correctly, slip a small screwdriver into the closed end of the red thingy and move it away (to the right in the picture). Then you should be able to uncouple the plug.

Like soyomb has said, that red piece is the lcok, has to be disengaged before you can get both connectors pryed apart.

Using your pic as a reference slide the red piece to the right. It moves between 1/16th and 1/8th of an inch (not much). It doesn't need to be removed completely. That will unlock the connector and allow you to separate it.

xlnt thanks . i already tried that and it wouldn't move but that was after i tried to pull the plug apart so there might be tension on it . i will push the plug back together then try it and will post the results.

only been working on cars for 40 years and still can't disconnect a "simple" plug, lol.

Use WD 40 or better to use electrical parts cleaner on dirty connectors before attempting working on them if possible.
Be patient with them they will come apart without any force. The last thing you want to do is break the connector or the locking tab.

FYI for those that frequent auto wrecking yards. I use to clip off at the wires about 2-3 inches from the connector as many different type of locking connects to have in the shop/garage for the occasional replacement of broken ones and also for electrical projects.

Barnett468,
Better get used to those locking clips. They are everywhere on the PT Cruiser. The good thing is that once you know how they work, it's a piece of cake to remove the connectors and reinstall them without forcing or breaking anything.
