Default P0401 code keeps coming back but no pending code

Hi
The car is a 2002 pt non turbo touring 110k I just had the head surfaced then replaced head gasket, timing belt and components, water pump and a cracked exhaust manifold with Dorman oem replacement. After it overheated on my girl friend and she kept driving {thermostat stuck}. No issues with the repair which I did myself but since then about once a week it throws the egr valve code P0401 I would normally just replace the egr valve but it was not bad before she overheated the car and there are no pending codes after it throws the P0401 anyone have recommendation or comment.

Thanks

On a PT Cruiser, insufficient EGR flow is detected by the MAP sensor. The PCM expects a pressure change sensed by the MAP sensor when the EGR valve is actuated. If there is not enough of a pressure change, it can throw the P0401 code.

If me, I would remove the MAP sensor and clean it. Chances are it's not bad, only dirty. I've seen engines with blown head gaskets that sometime blow bunt coolant back into the intake manifold. Yours may need a thorough flush and cleaning. I'd also look for any potential vacuum leaks and make sure the vacuum lines and electrical plug is an good shape on the EGR system.

It should be noted that I am a Safety Engineer among other things and I haven't worked as a professional mechanic since I was young strapping lad with long sexy flowing hair before college. And even then, I mainly worked on big trucks and heavy equipment. Nowadays, I enjoy working on these funny looking little cars for fun and relaxation.

More than likely you attached the EGR valve right, but there's three vacuum lines on the EGR transducer. You may have mixed up the two that go on the same side, or more likely you just forgot to reattach the electrical connector.

a P0401 is a universal code for misfire in cylinder 1, not an EGR code. Double check what code number you are getting.

Edit: Nope nvm im dumb
