Default TURBO VS NON TURBO WATER PUMP AND TIMING BELT KIT

I have a 2002 non turbo pt cruiser and the water pump is leaking.

Is the turbo pump a direct replacement with the non turbo pump?

What brand of turbo pumps are decent?

What is the best timing belt and tensioner set for the money?

Thanks in advance for any help.

instead of beating a dead horse about water pumps, you might read through results 1,2, and 4 here: water pump differences

personally i'd rather have a waterpump with a metal impeller than a plastic one, regardless of flow rates

for TB kits, many here like gates

I am planning to use an turbo Airtex water pump on my N/A Pt Cruiser when I change my timing belt.

There are several reasons to look at an Airtex water pump. Improved casting over other brands including OEM, less frictional fluid drag, timken bearing and seal. Proven engineering design to lower the chances of high RPM cavitation and improved water flow volume.

The only design difference in pumps is the impeller shape. The NA PT's have an open-face impeller and the turbo uses a closed-face impeller. The closed-face impeller creates less drag at high RPM's. The turbo pump with work fine on a NA PT Cruiser but there is likely no benefit.

The OEM turbo impeller is plastic. Whomever Airtex is buying their pumps from in China also uses a plastic impeller. Or at least they did last time someone posted a photo of one. Many other makers do as well. However, the Gates turbo PT water pump (made in US or Canada by union employees making a living wage) has a cast steel closed-face impeller.

NA PT Cruiser water pump:

And here's my write up on this in an earlier thread.

Timing Belt?

I agree with NitroPT that the Airtex Water Pump is the best water pump for a PT Cruiser.

Why is it better than the gates?

No one on this forum has demonstrated any advantage to the Airtex Chinese water pump nor any improvement in its engineering. And no one has shown any results from any field testing. To be exact, field testing different brands of water pumps would take a great deal of time and be very expensive to do. If Airtex themselves hasn't performed field testing and published results specific to the PT Cruiser, I doubt anyone else has any reason to do this and no one likely ever will.

Plus, no one has even shown that Airtex buys all their water pumps from a single Chinese distributor. It's possible that the Airtex pump you get today may have nothing in relation with the one someone else bought yesterday. In general Airtex products appear to be affordable and generally liked in many cases. But this says nothing of engineering design nor actual comparison testing.

So when in doubt, I say buy the Gates part with obvious design improvements, a great reputation and made by a North American company that promotes a living wage for its workers. But that's just my opinion.

Since you're going to be into it to change the water pump, I'll suggest a timing belt and tensioner change too. Also do the cam and crank seals and CHECK THE CENTER MOTOR MOUNT! That one is often overlooked.

PT cruiser repair issue - Comments and thoughts most welcome

Leaky waterpump only 20k...

Handy Cruiser, you must like replacing parts on your PT Cruiser all the time. Above is a couple of links where the gates water pump replacement failed. How many threads have you looked the other way when it came to the gates water pump failing? I can post plenty of threads with the gates water pump failing.
