Default Is my water pump causing a coolant leak

Our 2002 with 70k miles has started leaking coolant rather heavily. (note the car had a coolant flush to switch to green before i bought it - 25k ago). The upper and lower thermostat housings seem to remain dry from all angles I was able to view them. The highest place I can see water is the bottom bolt of the water pump.

One other notable is that the water will continue to leak with the car off and the fluid level in the rad is still full ... guessing it's just leaking the fluid out of the block (which seemingly should eliminate anything above the thermostat?).

Anyone other areas I should check that would be above the water pump or any other insight before I commit to the timing belt/water pump project?

I didn't see many other threads about failed water pump gaskets. I'm guessing this isn't too common? (it's possible the prior owner did the timing belt 25k ago and the pump/gasket are aftermarket. Sadly, no records available).

Some images are attached. I got a clear view of the upper housing so i'm confident that's ok. I can only see the top half of the lower housing .. it looks dry, but it could be possible that it's leaking out of the lower side of it where it bolts to the head. Even with the wheel well cover removed I still couldn't get a look at it. It looks like i'll have to start disassembly to truly inspect it.

---

Here's a video I took. It does a great job of showing how fast the leak is. You can see also see how the bottom water pump bolt is involved in the water flow. (i kept trying to fix the focus, but my phone did not obey).

Nice eye! It definitely looks like you're right. Thanks for the catch

It looks like the opposing web on the lower has some nice dry rot and is about to fail too. I'll try to spy the upper tomorrow. If i can't see it then i'll just assume it's also bad.

Here's a pic of the bad lower with dry rot. I also pointed at the lower bolt of the water pump. You can kind of see how the right side of the pump is dry.. leading to the leak either being right at the bolt or somewhere to the left of it (or above it)

EDIT: hmm.. looks like the forum reduces the resolution significantly. Here's a higher res version: http://i.imgur.com/CrKE2BH.jpg

Thanks, I'll just add the upper to the order then.

Anyone have any experience with a leaking water pump?

Hmm, Sorry for anyone that reads this and is confused about what the topic is. I edited my original post to include thumbnailed images and the entire post just up and vanished. I assume it'll be restored when a mod comes online - though, the thread sure wont make much sense for interim vistors

relevant support post: OP post gone?

That's how mine was when it was leaking. Nothing left to do but change it. Takes about 7 hours.
