Default 2006 pt cruiser getting hot on highway

Hello i have a 06 pt cruiser non turbo base model
when idling the car is normal temp and radiator fan is running
when going down the highway the car will overheat and i cant tell if the fan is running while driving but temp goes way up.

i want to get a new fan but someone in the past has removed the connector from the harness and spliced the wires
i have 3 wires coming from the fan 2 blue and one black.
while shopping for a new fan i see the 3 pin connector and a 4 pin connector
which should i get?
since i do not have the connector end from the car and then new fan will come with one i was going to solder the wires to the others from the old harness

i have looked online for a new connector but no one has one for the power connector piece.

any help would be appreciated
thank you
robert

Welcome to the forum

The previous owner cut the fan connector from the main harness?

The fan should be a 4-wire connector:

You might want to consider going to a U-Pull-It yard in your area and getting an original type 4 wire connector off the main harness from a donor vehicle and splice it onto your main harness. When you get a fan, you should also consider getting getting the complete fan assembly with the harness and relays.

When you get a chance, please go to Welcome New PT Cruiser Members - PT Cruiser Forum and create your intro thread.

The year 2006 Pt Cruiser was the first year that the radiator fan was switched over to the 4 pin connector depending on what month your Pt Cruiser was manufactured. I would suggest you get the VIN number off your vehicle take it to the dealer and ask them if your Pt Cruiser has the 3 pin or 4 pin radiator fan plug. You are indicating only three wires going to your radiator fan.

Yep, there are 3 and 4 pin fan assemblies listed on several auto parts websites for the '06.

What is the build date of your PT? It will be on the VIN label on the edge of the drivers door, on the top line in the middle: DATE OF MFR

The fan cuts off at 44 MPH & comes back on when you get down to about 35 MPH...so I wouldn't think the fan would be the problem...JMO

If you are overheating on the freeway you need to do a coolant compression test to make sure your coolant system is sealed.

If that is okay I would suggest you check your thermostat. It might not be opening all the way.

Post back what you find out.

hi robert. robert here. i have seen this problem before. the problem was that the guy had the fan wired backwards. when the car is on the highway, the fan is fighting the cool air trying to go through the bumper. this ends up as a stalemate, air ceases to flow, and the car will overheat.. only while moving. this is soooooo easy to check(and FREE) i highly recommend that you verify the fan is sucking in and not blowing out.

this is incorrect. only the low speed is disabled
see here:

backwards fan seems very likely here

The 3 and 4 pin fan connection probably depends on the old ECM/ 2 Fuse box (3 pin) or new PCM/TIPM (4-PIN)

Hi Robert, Robert here. Robert's suggestion about the reversed fan is a good one and easy to check. Like Lion, I tend not to suspect the fan if the problem is at speed and not idle/traffic, but the fan blowing the wrong way could cause the problem.

Hello, thank you for all the replies
here is what i have checked so far...
the fan is running at idle blowing air towards the engine
the coolant pressure test holds 15 lbs pressure no problem
date of manufactor is 4/06
i can feel air being pulled from front of ac condensor and radiator seems plenty of air movement, but not sure of inside of radiator
so i ordered another radiator to replace the original one
i will try the new radiator with the current fan and see what happens
but i still do not know what fan to buy if i need one a four wire or three wire fan

thank you for your help
