Default How to replace cooling control module

The A/C isn't working in a 2007 PT Cruiser Convertible, and the shop diagnosed the problem as the cooling control module. But they said that they were required to change the whole fan assembly, which would also require recharging with freon. Total price would be around $700.

They said I might could get someone just to replace the module. It looks like I could get the remanufactured part for around $250 after the core rebate.

My question is: How hard would it be just to change this one part? Would changing this also require taking the radiator fan off and disconnecting the condenser which would require a fresh recharge as well?

Thanks for any help.

Just introduced myself.

Following up on my original post here. After trying to search more on this issue I'm a little confused on exactly which part I need. The shop is calling it a "cooling module." Is that the same as an Engine Control Module? I'm also running across a part called a PCM. Is this different?

I've also read that some of these computer parts have to be reprogrammed before you can install them. Would that be the case for this part I need?

The cooling fans start to fail around 100,000 miles give or take. I've never paid more than $120 for the complete fan assembly and with a few small tools and about 2 hours just about any body could replace the fan assembly.

Does the fan come if you turn the AC on...
IF you have a low charge on AC Freon it may not.
Normally the fan cycles before the temp gunge gets to half

Please avoid over heating as it will lead to major mechanical repair.

I talked to the shop manager and not the mechanic directly, but the shop manager said the mechanic was able to bypass the module and everything worked fine so it's just the module that needs to be replaced. However he said they aren't allowed to just change out the module.

So the freon is fully charged, the condenser comes on, and the fans work.

I'm trying to find a video or diagrams on just changing out this module but am coming up empty so far.

You might want to call the shop manager back and ask him if the module he is talking about is the PCM.

I picked up the car, and the manager pointed out the modules. I then took it to a mechanic friend, and he said they were the fan relays that are suppose to turn the fan on whenever the A/C kicks on. He said they shouldn't be but $20 apiece and just snap on and off.
