Default Check Engine Light - no codes???

So, tonight as I was leaving a concert I had just played in, FIREBALL's Check Engine light came on. When I got a chance, I did the 'key-dance' and: "----- done"

There were no codes. I started it and drove a bit more, and tried again. Same thing.

Maybe tomorrow night I will hook my code reader up and see if it comes up with anything. Any ideas?

The "key dance" is reportedly not very reliable for pulling codes, a dedicated code reader is much better.

However, when I was having the TIPM replaced on my PT, both airbag lights were still on. However, my UltraGauge was not displaying any error codes. But before I left the Goodyear shop they also did another scan with their equipment, which I believe was a SnapOn machine, and their equipment also showed no codes.

I was going to the dealership to get the TIPM programmed because Goodyear doesn't have the STARSCAN equipment required to program it. When I got to the dealership, their equipment pulled up 4 active codes and 3 stored. I've seen this before, why would dealership equipment be better than others, and why don't all dedicated code readers pull up all codes, especially those that are stored and active?

Well my freind is somewhat correct ^^

Depending on which model Ultra Gauge used it WILL show the monitors.
The key dance really is useless
A Diagnostic scan that can read the monitors is all you need and unless the PCM is failing or there is a connect-ability issue you will find why the light was activated.

I'm heading out right now to connect my code reader to see if I find anything.

EDIT:

OK so I hooked up the Code Reader and got P0456, slight evap leak, so I am HOPING it's just a gas cap thing. It's pouring rain (AGAIN!!!) so I'll check it later.

Just had the same code on my Dodge Stratus last week. Hmmmm.

The key dance is not "totally useless". I have never had a time where a dedicated code-reader or my ultragauge show a code that the key dance didn't. I am sure that those methods are better and may occasionally find something the key dance won't. but it is certainly a useful tool if a code reader is not available at that particular moment. I have been using it since the 80's when you had to count the flashes.

Do you have an after-market gas cap? If so, that could be the problem.

I use a locking gas cap and had originally purchased a Stant brand but it kept throwing the gas cap error. Went with an original MOPAR locking cap and no problems since. I am on the second MOPAR cap as they wear out about every 3 years.

P0456

What this means is the car is detecting a leak in the fuel system. Not a leak of liquid fuel, rather a leak in the airspace or gas fumes section of the fuel system.

This type of failure often turns out to be a bad gas cap. Sometimes there can be a rust spot on the fuel tank or filler neck or another leak elsewhere in the fuel vapor system.

It's the original stock gas cap.

I did get gas last week, but it's been fine. Like I said, I had the same thing happen on my Stratus.

I will check it out for sure, and THANKS for ALL of the replies.

"MUCHLY" appreciated.

Even MOPAR gas caps wear out after a while, especially if yours is original to the vehicle.

The key dance is only giving you a small portion of the information you can get from the computer that you need to fully understand what is happening with your Pt Cruiser. Why waste so much time with the key dance when the OBDII Scan Tool has so much more features including telling you that you are ready to smog your PT Cruiser?
