Default Power steering code?

Hi all,
Have a 2002 pt cruiser with 65k mkles on it. Check engine light came on a few days ago and have been driving it ever since with no notable issues. Hooked up my reader short time ago and it shows a PO551 code which is power steering pressure sensor. I cleared the code but the light still stays on. Power steering feels no different than always and the fluid level
is fine. Pondering my next step. If you think it could be the sensor please advise if you know where it is located, how to remove and test. If its not the sensor how else can you troubleshoot. Also dont see any power steering fluid leaks anywhere. One other thing. When clearing the code i tried it with the engine running as well as tryinv to clear the code with the key in the forward acc. Position. Neither would clear and shut the light off. Thx for help

P0551 - Power Steering Pressure Switch Circuit Failure:

Possible Causes:
1. Power Steering Pressure Switch sense circuit is open or is shorted to ground
2. Power Steering Pressure Switch ground circuit is open
3. Power Steering Pressure Switch is damaged or it has failed
4. PCM has failed

It should be mounted on the rear of the rack on the driver's side.

Did you check to make sure the power steering fluid level is okay?

The link below shows where the Power Steering Switch is located.
Attachment 17778

This video will give you a better idea of how to get to the switch.

The steering pressure switch failure (p0551) is fairly common and typically fixed by replacing the sensor. Not a hard job to due if you have a jack and jack stands to get under the car.

I would suggest checking the wiring and contacts first beforr looking at the sensor.

I am going to check and possibly replace the sensor this weekend. Can anyone confirm if you pull the sensor out of the rack and pinion unit will power steering fluid come out or not. Thx

Yes fluid will come out, how much depends on how quickly you remove the old sensor and get the new one back in place...
When I changed the switch out in mine I lost enough fluid that I had to top off the reservoir. I used maybe a 1/4 of a small bottle to refill.
