Default Water Pump RTV or Not?

I'm going to start putting my 01 back together today. Changing the head gasket, timing belt and water pump. Just got the head back from being milled. My question is whether to use RTV sealant on the water pump gasket or not. I'm finding inconsistent information about this and I'm wondering what everyone has done. Thanks!

i did mine at a friends shop with guidance. i was told it was not needed, but that i could if it made me feel better. i applied a very thin film of RTV because it makes me sleep better at night.

RTV is another one of those common;y used and by most mis-used sealers on an engine. RTV can work successfully if the correct RTV is used for the specif job and the directions for use are followed. Most that use them and have leaks later are generally because they did not follow the directions.

So to answer the question Re: Water Pump RTV or Not? it all depends on the job being done and the condition of parts, the parts used, and if I have the correct RTV for the job.

Soooo sometimes YES and sometimes NO

There's lots of opinions on this and it may even start a fight here.

That said, the service manual usually does not specify anything but the gasket for this type of thing. You can download a copy of a 2001 thru 2004 service manual from my Google Drive at this link:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B9C...ew?usp=sharing

But for me installing a water pump, I'm going to use Permatex Ultra Blue. I will only apply it to the water pump side and then apply the gasket or o-ring to it. On the engine side I will just make sure the block is really clean. Using the RTV simply helps holds the gasket in place and helps fill in any irregularities in the mating surfaces that might permit a leak.

It should be noted that while I am an ASE Certified Master Automotive Tech, I primarily work as a Safety Engineer among other things and I haven't worked as a professional mechanic since I was young strapping lad with long sexy flowing hair before college. And even then, I mainly worked on big trucks and heavy equipment. Nowadays, I enjoy working on these funny looking little cars for fun and relaxation. And I help others when I can.

Thanks for the input everyone. The debate continues haha. My PT has 89,000 on it. The block surface is smooth with no pitting. I bought permatex ultra gray. I will only be using it to hold the gasket then finger tighten, let sit for an hour and torque. Then I'll let it sit for 24 hours. Thanks again!

Not really a dabate common sence and reading directions hahahaha!

I see you like grey as do I for most everything..but then I also own several Motorcycles. I see in your user name "Moped" so I guess you keep a tube of grey always around the house or garage.
