Default 2004 GT TURBO...DEAD

Wife's gt died while driving..got it home..pulled two codes P0340 (camshaft sensor)...and P0016 (crankshaft sensor)..since they are related..looks like it's a timing belt issue..belt has approx 80,000 miles on it, 149,000 on the car, engine turns over...but won't start..all other functions are fine, lights, horn..etc...hoping it might just be a sensor problem...lot easier to repair..anyone have a better idea on this than me ?? thanks..pj

There's always a small chance something else has happened, but what you described is classic timing belt failure for a PT Cruiser.

To make sure, just pull the little plastic dust cover off the time belt sprockets. Chances are you will see a broken belt or sprockets that don't turn when you crank the engine. If all seems good, remove #1 spark plug and get the piston all the way up during the compression stroke if you have any compression. Lack of compression will also confirm belt failure with the other signs you gave. But if there is some compression at all, chances are the visible timing mark on one or both of the cam sprockets will be pretty far off. This means the failed belt as slipped but not broken.
