Default Horrific Grinding noise when engine is running

Alright......... even more problems. I'm using a used t350 from a junkyard, also a used clutch. In between my transmission and motor there has been a horrific grinding noise, it sounds like when you spin something too fast and it slows down with vibration. I don't think it's my rods because it happened literally over 5 minutes and I wasn't even running my motor hard. It also doesn't have a knocking noise. When cranked with the starter ( pulled coil pack ) it makes a clunk sound, but still doesn't sound like bearings. Please help me. I'm almost done with my project and I don't want to ruin it already.

By the way, the motor is a 2.4 turbo, my starter is a 41te starter, my trans is from an 03 neon, a t350 3.55 with neon transmission components, and the transmission is full and not leaking any fluid. The flywheel is rusty but is solidly bolted. One more thing is that a tooth from the clutch spring is bent inward but only slightly. It doesn't sound like the sound is coming from there either

Does the noise change when you engage the clutch?

Sounds like maybe the starter bendix is staying engaged in the flywheel teeth. Maybe the starter is different?

I'll guess loose flex plate or flywheel

I suspect that both rob and chuzz may be right. I just hope it isn't the rods

I've been monkeying around with cars since I was a kid. I've NEVER heard grinding noise from rods. They knock when they're getting ready to seize or turn loose. Get under it and check the gravel shield, the flywheel and the starter. Get back to us.

Which rusty flywheel do you have? The turbos came with a weird two piece flywheel. Mine started to come apart and made it almost impossible to take in and out of gear while running. Stopped it shifted like butter. The two parts were moving at different speeds and monkeying things up. Didn't make much noise though.

How wide are these flywheels supposed to be? I think those measurements are pretty important and you are using a turbo engine in a non-turbo car with a Neon trans that wasn't in PTs if IIRC. Sounds like a place to start. Not sure why anybody would ever put a car together with a rusty flywheel...

Any shavings in the bell housing area. If so steel or aluminium?

No shavings, play in the flywheel. Transmission from the neon bolts right on to the turbo motor. The N/A PT uses the same manual trans as I have in here. I'm trying to figure out an easier way to drop the trans as well
