Default Click coming from the steering rack

Thanks to everyone in advance for any attempt to help. I have a 2001 PT Cruiser turbo that has developed a click that sounds like a light switch when I turn the steering. It will make one click as I start turning and then another when I turn back. If I turn the car off and steer it I don't hear anything. I also can not get the click sound when the front wheels are off the ground. It sounds like it is coming from the rack.
Car has 154,000 miles on it. The tie rods are tight and the car steers without a problem.
Any thoughts?

one thing you didnt tell which would have been useful - is this symptom with the car rolling, or static ?

I can only hear it when the car is being steered at low speed like in a parking lot. It may make the same sound when I'm driving but I can't hear it.

Look in the wheel well at the strut and have someone turn the steering wheel. It could be the bearing on the top of the strut, or more likely a broken spring. Either could do what you describe.

Might also add they did not make a turbo PT in 2001. I'm curious how you know the tie rods are tight, but have either the year or turbo part wrong?
VsandFords and chuzz like this.

Sorry it is a 2003. I will check the springs but it is coming from under the car.
I also jacked the car up and feel no play in the wheel when it grab it. I guess it may be the inner tie rod. I will need to take the wheel off and see if I can get push and pull on it to recreate the noise.

So I got off early from work and put the car up on stands and took the wheels off. The tie rod on the side with the problem was easily turned so I replaced the inner and outer tie rod. When I put it back on the ground I could still here a slight sound but it was much reduced. I am calling this a success. Thanks to everyone for their help.

sounds like a loose tie rod or control arm flexing due to worn bushings
