Default Timing belt and error code P0344

My timing belt should have been changed a long time ago but since it's an old car with other faults I don't want to spend to much time and money. I will just run it until it breaks down (and then buy a newer PT Cruiser).

Now I have the error code P0344 which is a crank shaft position issue. Could this be related to a bad timing belt? Otherwise the motor is running smooth and no noise (but some other issues as leaking water pump, excessive oil consumption etc.)

If the timing belt is at the end of it's life, it could be stretching and causing the timing to be off just a bit, enough to turn on either the cam or crank sensor light. I know you said you don't want to spend the money or time but you'll wish you did when all of a sudden your belt goes south and you won't be going anywhere and according to Murphy's law, it will never happen at an opportune time. Either you'll jump into your car, late for an appointment or far from home in the middle of nowhere.

Welcome to the forum.

P0344 - Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Intermittent Conditions

Possible Causes:

Wiring harness fault 5 volt supply circuit open or shorted to ground
Tone wheel/pulse ring is damaged or corroded
Camshaft Sensor has failed
Camshaft Sensor signal circuit is open, shorted to ground or battery voltage or 5 volt supply
Camshaft Sensor ground circuit is open
PCM has failed

I would suggest first checking the Camshaft Position Sensor wiring and connector. If both check out fine then you check to see if the Camshaft Position Sensor is working properly. Usually when the Camshaft Position Sensor starts to go out the engine will go into limp mode when you try to go over approx. 60 mph. If you do replace the Camshaft Position Sensor make sure you don't over torque the bolts holding the sensor or you will crack the sensor.

just take your own advice, run until the thing breaks down and get a replacement. why even try to maintain, or repair it.

like what ptcruisersteve said below, only keep an eye on obvious things like oil level and coolant.

Just make sure you keep an eye on the overflow coolant tank so you don't over heat the engine. Keep extra water in the Pt Cruiser in case you need it. I keep an eye daily on my 2 Pt Cruisers and they have never left me walking yet.

Thanks for all advices. I will check the sensor first, then I will decide what to do with the car.

I check coolant and refill once a month.

I have been dealing with this dreaded p0344 for months and can't figure out what is happening to my poor little PT GT. When this first happened I went to Auto Zone and got a new cam sensor and that worked great for a couple of months. Then it started happening again (limp mode and P 0344, plus now p 0300 and p 0301). I stopped at Auto Zone and since the last purchase was in January (this is September) it was under warantee, so they gave me a new one. I replaced this and still the same code, so I went back the next day and replaced the new one with another ... still same problem.

Timing belt was changed about a year ago, but I AM having to replace lost water (quart or more daily) in system every day, and have no idea where that water is going, no steam, no water leaks that I can see and no water in oil nor oil in water, and no water on ground except what I may spill when adding water to overflow bottle. One mechanic told me I have a "blown head gasket" and told me under the car there was a water leak coming from the turbo. (Could that be right? He wants $700 to replace gasket)

Oh, 2003 PT GT with turbo, haven't had AC on in over a year, drive about 70 miles a day in mountains, and has 187,900 miles.

Oil light is also on intermittent, I have the sensor for that but haven't changed that yet, haven't had time to get my big hands into that tight space (yet).

Happy Days, FINALLY.

I got rid of the dreaded P 0344, it took a trip to my "trusted" mechanic that just got a new scope and was dying to try it out.

He thought originally that the timing belt had skipped a tooth, but lo and behold, it was a cracked coil pack. Who would'a thought.

He charged me $85 for the part and $30 labor, but it is ALL WORKING great now.

The leaking water was a cracked hose under the water reclaim bottle, and he replaced the Oil Pressure Sending Unit while he was under there. He replaced the water in the system with coolant, so I am ready for Winter now.

He also found a small oil leak near the underside of the turbo, and fixed that too.

Just wanted to share this in case you are still having trouble with your cam sensor.

Congratulations! Sounds like you have an honest and trustworthy mechanic. Be sure to remember him this Christmas with a gift of some kind. He will appreciate it and continue to give you honest work and prices.
