Default PT cruiser P0344, replaced Camshft sensor, and still same code

Hello:

My Pt cruiser 2005 doesn't want to start. The error code is P0344 so I changed the Camshaft sensor and checked connections. I tried to start after that and I hear a big explotion. I dont know what it was,no smoke any place in the engine. Still doesnt start, I only hear the starter but not ignition. I can see all the timming belt, but what I can see looks ok.
Somebody has an idea of the problem?

Thanks for your help

Did you check to see if the Camshaft is turning after removing the Camshaft Position Sensor?

If it is turning check the wiring from the Camshaft Position Sensor to the PCM.

How many miles are on the car and has the timing belt every been changed?

Also, when did it stop running?

Much of the time a 2003 and newer PT will still run but go into "Limp Home Mode" when a cam sensor failure is detected. You can try disconnecting the sensor and then crank the engine. Disconnected it may take up to ten seconds but should likely start if this is the only issue.

If the car does not start this way, take a multimeter and check the voltage in the cam sensor plug with the key on. The center wire is a ground, the other two (tan and orange) should have somewhere near +5 volts on each.

And how are you seeing the timing belt? The only way to see this is if the top dust cover is removed on the right (passenger) side of the engine. If it is removed, the belt and sprockets should be turning when you crank the engine. If your PT has over 100,000 miles and the timing belt has never been changed, a slipped or failed timing belt could be the issue. The backfire might be another indicator of that, but not necessarily.

Check these things and then get back to us.

I miss the old days. To check the timing belt in the 2.2 you just popped the cap and checked if the distributor turned when you cranked it over. Can't do that anymore
