Default Disintegrating A/C lines

I spoke with a mechanic I trust this morning about replacing my A/C compressor. He warned me that some A/C lines and possibly the compressor can disintegrate on the inside leaving minute particles there that can clog the lines and possibly damage the compressor.

I was not aware of this. Can anyone shed more light on the subject? I would like to be able to repace the compressor myself but am skeptical of my ablilities considering the "minute particles" issue and how they might affect the rest of the system. If someone could shed some light on this I would appreciate it.

Thanks.

Its possible but if I had to guess this was a "older" mechanic . The problem mentioned was more during the age with R12 refrigerant system long since gone. Personally I have not ever serviced an R134/R134a system that had internal contamination due to simply age. Now if someone used less then good servicing of the AC system who knows?

Generally I will evacuate and "pull" the R134a out of the AC system for service work. If the system will be left unsealed I will baggy and rubber band the open hoses. Of the hundreds or more compressors and other AC parts I have changed over the years (R134/R134a systems) I have never had an issue with a compressor failing because of particles in the AC system.

R12 AC systems are a different "beast" and not really a topic for PT Cruisers.
