Its possible but if I had to guess this was a "older" mechanic . The problem mentioned was more during the age with R12 refrigerant system long since gone. Personally I have not ever serviced an R134/R134a system that had internal contamination due to simply age. Now if someone used less then good servicing of the AC system who knows?
Generally I will evacuate and "pull" the R134a out of the AC system for service work. If the system will be left unsealed I will baggy and rubber band the open hoses. Of the hundreds or more compressors and other AC parts I have changed over the years (R134/R134a systems) I have never had an issue with a compressor failing because of particles in the AC system.
R12 AC systems are a different "beast" and not really a topic for PT Cruisers.
