Default Stripped Oil Plug Fix

Last night I changed my oil and when I removed the plug an old helicoil came out with it. Seems someone thought the oil plug in the aluminum pan held the engine in and stripped it out at some point. I can't say here what my 1st thought was.

So I started going over ways we would fix stripped out threads and I remembered we usually got lucky by replacing the regular oil plug with a longer bolt with the same thread, Since the oil plug is short and the oil pan hole is threaded all the way through a longer bolt will utilize those unused threads. If it's a steel pan this won't be an option

I checked the oil plug threads and they are 14mm X 1.5. Went to our local Ace Hardware and bought a bolt I think in length was 45mm. Before running it in I put a new crush washer on it and problem solved.

However, if anyone one should over tighten and strip it out again it won't be such an easy fix.

I wanted to pass this along as a stripped out aluminum oil pan plug is probably more common than you'd think.

I had the same problem. If one makes oil changes at "Precision Auto" then pretty soon there will be a stripped oil drain plug. I installed a drain valve like this CHRYSLER
Since my threads were stripped, I had to use JB weld. No issues since then.

Hey, I've got one of those now. Wonder where it came from?
