Unhappy Electrical System Fried. How do I know what to fix?

2002 Limited Edition 5-speed manual. 106k miles.

I made the mistake of getting distracted while jumping my PT, switched up the cables, and fried it... The cables were connected for less than 30 seconds and I turned off the powering car first before disconnecting. PT won't start and the digital odometer won't come on. No electricity works in the vehicle. Where do I start if I want to self-repair? Fuses? Circuit breaker? Wiring?

I had not driven it in a while and was going to polish it up before selling it but ended up frying it... Most I can find someone to offer to pick it up is $125 since it won't turn on but it's in decent condition and would like to get something more out of it. Any advice is welcome.

First and easiest things to check are all the fuses, both under the hood and in the interior.

Definitely! I felt so defeated after my dumb mistake I haven't checked the car out... I will check the fuses when I get home in an hour or so.

After I burned up the first (CHEAP) pair of jumpers, I went out and bought another pair and attempted to jump the car again (correctly this time) with absolutely no response from the car.

I check both sets of fuses and everything checked out fine. I'm sure that's not good news for me. What would be the next step to identifying what electrical system part is broken?

it's going to be the biggest, main fuse on the car. don't feel like an idiot, it happens to the best of us sometimes !

Are you checking to see if you have any voltage going to the fuses?

Are their any "fusible links" within the wiring on a PT? Often you find these look like slight bulges in the wires going away from the battery to the electrical equipment.

Don't feel stupid - some people voted for Brexit.

Also suggest checking the battery. 30 seconds is a long time and might have damaged cells in the battery. If you have enough shorted cells you might not be able to jump start it.
ptprice, JoeX and Sinbad like this.
