Fyi..on my cruiser the ac compressor is seized up and bypassed with relay removed....so i can not test fan just by turning ac on

Low Speed kicks in to cool the engine, high speed is brought in by the AC.

Bear in mind, the temp gauge is crude, but low speed *should* come on automatically whenever the temperature dial goes a tad over mid way. You likely will not hear it, but it should.

Low speed fan burn out is very very common on PT's.

hi im not sure that is correct and please correct me if i am wrong but there

seems to be contradicting information online

low speed....ac condenser cooling
high speed...engine cooling

i just confirmed that my low speed does not work and my high speed does work via direct 12v to fan connection

green wire is low speed
yellow wire is high speed

and that chart you provided is not accurate for 2001 pt cruiser

when ac is on the cooling fan should turn on... ....has nothing to do with temp

from what i have gathered.....the low speed is for cooling ac condenser only and has nothing to do with temp of coolant etc....the high speed is temp sensitive and should turn on when coolant gets to certain temp and mine is not turning on

for the mechanic to say that the engine is overheating due to low speed fan not working...i totally disagree

am i wrong?

A high percentage of the time when the engine overheats the radiator fan turns out to be bad. Usually you have warning when the PCM triggers P0480 or P0481 and turns on the engine light. I have never had my engine overheat as I always check to see what the codes are when the engine trouble light comes on and replace the radiator fan after verifying it is not working properly. If any of the brushes in the motor of the radiator fan are not making contact the speed of the radiator fans slows down and reduces the air flow going into the radiator. I suggest replacing the radiator fan immediately if the radiator fan does not come on manually on low or high speed. RockAuto has the radiator fan for sale for about $90.00 and its a peace of mind knowing we are doing what we can to keep the engine cool. I keep a brand new spare radiator fan in the garage in case either of my Pt Cruisers radiator fan goes bad.

steve

yes my low speed fan is not working via direct 12v to dan
my high speed works fine direct 12v to fan

im just trying to make sense out of this before i repalce the fan

i do not have ac on this car anymore so i dont need low speed if low speed is only used for ac condenser cooling

seems to be lots of conflicting online info on how the fan operatres on this year pt cruiser

i have heard now 3 diff scenarios

1. low speed: comes on when ac on
high speed comes on when temp calls for it

2 low speed: comes on when temp calls for it
high speed: comes on when ac on

3 low speed: variable turn on with ot without ac on
high speed variable turn on with or without ac on

and steve....my high speed fan never turns on

temp gauge goes past half way and never comes on so i usually stop driving car

i have never let vehciel since i have owned it actually go to red zone....

im just saying that temp does seem to go high when idling a while or slow driving in hot weather and i have not seen fan power on at all during these times

mechanic says fan (low speed not working) is the issue but i disagree due to the fact that the high speed is working

high speed should come on at one time or another during high temp stage and its not
