Default Correct Oil Grade for 2010 PT Cruiser?

Newer PT Cruiser owner here.

My manual says the following: "Use API Certified SAE 5W-20 Engine Oil, meeting the requirements of Chrysler Material Standard MS-6395. Refer to your engine oil filler cap for correct SAE grade."

I went out and bought some Valvoline 5W-20 oil based on this, however, I noticed that the owner before me had this filled with 5W-30 last time. I also see that other PT owners typically use 5W-30, but for older model year versions.

My filler cap is aftermarket (the owner must have replaced it), and it does not have an indication for oil grade on it.

What oil should I be using for my 2010 PT? Will 5W-20 be wrong (even when the manual says the above)?

Thanks for any help.

You've bought the right oil.

Really... don't worry about it - the only "bad" oil is the one that's too low or you don't change often enough.

The 2010 PT Cruiser Owner's Manual that I downloaded from the Chrysler website:

https://www.chrysler.com/download/pd...oad-button.y=8

Says that the correct oil is 5W-30:

I haven't looked in awhile, but most dipsticks have the oil grade above the fill level.

It's on the top of the oil fill cap, but not on the dipstick.

What it does say on the dipstick:

"ADD 1 QT AT MIN DO NOT OVERFILL SEE OWNERS MANUAL FOR TYPE"

5w-20 in the winter, 5/10w-30 in the summer. our winter shift to the lighter 5w-20 results in much improved acceleration (imo)

Okay, now this is REALLY odd.

My CD manual for my car says 5W-20, and this online manual I downloaded for the 2010 PT Cruiser says 5W-20: https://cdn.dealereprocess.net/cdn/s...-ptcruiser.pdf

The manual is the SAME number of pages as yours and BOTH say that they are the third version of the manual.

Very strange. Maybe Chrysler realized their mistake and updated it on their official online manual without updating the version number?

You would think this would be a simple question, but it seems to have opened up more questions than answers. I think Rambojoe's answer is the way I will go, but I will see if I can find an official answer.

You could contact Chrysler Customer Assistance through their website:

https://www.chrysler.com/webselfserv...EmailPage.html

They might give you an answer or they may refer you to a dealership as the dealership would certainly have the correct info in their system.

If you were to buy a new oil filler cap, looking up the part number for the 2010 PT Cruiser:

53010656AA

Re: Correct Oil Grade for 2010 PT Cruiser?

I would suggest to understand what viscosity and the "W" mean regarding oils

Then read about this law regarding things like what to use for motor oils and other parts and services you choose to do with your vehicles.
The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act (P.L. 93-637)

Then go to one of several dozen informationals.
