Default Dropped into low gear????

Was driving to work tonight and my automatic 2008 PT felt like it dropped into low gear. Engine RPMs jumped. Still was able to make it to work but I did so driving no faster then 40mph. About a mile from my job the engine light went on. Hopefully Im able to drive it to my mechanic in the morning. Of course thats about 35 miles away.

Thoughts to what it might be???

Thanks in advance - Jase

You might have gone into limp mode if your camshaft sensor is not working properly.

if you have an auto parts store nearby you can find out what the diagnostic trouble code is. They can tell you what the code is or you can post it and we can give you great advice on how to fix it.

Okay Im not a car guru at all, but doesnt limp mode drop your RPMs? Cause when this happened my RPMs doubled and my engine actual sounded like it was working overtime to maintain 40mph. Do you think the transmission could be going out?? Now I still have reverse. Honestly it felt like I was driving and someone popped into 3 or 1, but I was still in D.

When it goes into limp mode you have only 2nd gear. This is why your rpm increased.

Yes you can but if after you find out what the code is and if it is the camshaft sensor I would try disconnecting the battery and reconnect the battery. This might take you out of limp mode long enough to get home. Please verify the code first as the limp mode is there for a reason. If the code is for something other then the camshaft sensor post it and we can tell you if it's okay to drive it home.

Anything is possible but the camshaft sensor is the most cause of the limp mode. Usually if your gneratorr started going bad your battery voltage would start dropping and you would start having trouble cranking it.

i keep a spare voltmeter in all my cars and if I am concerned if the generator is charging I check the battery voltage with it running and if its over 13.5 volts it's good to drive.

You can get a voltmeter at Harbor Freight for a very reasonable price. I get them for free being a repeated customer there.
