Default Radiator empty?

So I saw a little puddle under the front of the car and checked - it's coolant. I was not at home so hustled home and actually had a moment at a red light when the car wanted to overheat. Any other time it was right in the middle of the gauge. Once home I checked and the reservoir was empty. Let the engine cool off and opened the radiator - should I be able to see any fluid? Honestly, there have been no other puddles, and no other temperature issues. It of course decided to rain right now, so diagnostics will need to wait until tomorrow, but what in the world?

I would suggest checking the radiator hoses. Do an engine compression check if the hoses look good and not leaking.

front left, front right, or front and center?
__

front left i would check the crimp on the radiator tank. when mine failed the radiator, battery, and battery tray were wet

front center, when my lower radiator hose chafed on the fan it put a hole in the hose and it pissed out the middle

front right was when my waterpump took a dump.

__
should give you a starting point.

to answer your question, the coolant should ALWAYS be up to the coolant neck cap when you remove it.
