Default No Start - ideas?

Just purchased a 2008 PT base coupe. It had a broken shift cable when I got the car. I never heard it run but I know the previous owner well and the car ran until she parked it last march due to the bad cable.

Here is what I know so far.

The engine turns over and the cam gears are turning. It is almost as if it wants to start. A random cylinder will fire here and there but that is it.

There is fuel in the tank.

if you have any ideas, I would love to hear them

Thanks

I would suggest you post what you have done so far. This will help narrow down what the problem might be.

Okay Steve,

I got the car about a week ago. The car had a seized shift cable and a broken shifter. The console was removed and in the back of the car when I got it.

I replaced the cable and the shifter but have not put the console on yet so there are a few things unplugged by the shifter. I haven't looked at the console to see what they plug into.

I had some trouble with the new shift cable but that has been addressed.

The car sat for roughly 9 months. The battery wouldn't take a charge so I borrowed one from my other PT. The engine turns over and will occasionally sputter as if it wants to start but that is as far as it goes. I checked to see if the cam gears were turning and they are. I checked to see if the car had fuel and it does.

That is as far as I have gotten with it.

I would suggest you check for OBDII engine trouble codes. Post if you have codes.

If no codes put starter fluid in the throttle body and see if it starts to run unless you actually verified there is 58 +/- 5 PSI.

If fuel is not the issue I would suggest you check to make sure you have a strong spark in all cylinders. Sometimes one half of the coil goes bad so you need to make sure you check all the cylinders.

If you have strong spark I would suggest you do a engine compression check on all four cylinders.

Thanks Steve,

I have tried the following

Codes that come up are P0113, P0522, P0622

I tried a shot of starter fluid but that didn't seem make it try to start any more than before.

That's where I am at right now. Hopefully I'll have time to mess with it some more later.

Oh yea, the starter seems to turn the engine fairly slow. Battery is good and I have even hooked up jumper cables to give it some more juice but still turns over slow

Slow cranking with a new battery sounds like a bad ground connection to me. Now, keep in mind that I'm NOT an ASE Certified Master Mechanic, so am a novice. BUT, I'd check the ground connections both from the battery to the block and the battery to the driver side fender. The fender is a known problem area from time to time as battery acid and fumes can accumulate here and cause corrosion and the connectors to break off. Just a thought by this know nothing shade tree hillbilly.

I would suggest checking the battery voltage first when you are cranking. If the battery voltage is below 10.5 volts it will not run properly.

P0113 - IAT Sensor Circuit High Input Conditions:

Possible Causes:

1. IAT Sensor signal circuit shorted to VREF 5 volts
2. IAT Sensor signal circuit is open, or the ground circuit is open
3. IAT Sensor is damaged or it has failed
4. PCM has failed

P0113 can also be caused by a vacuum leak. Check all vacuum hoses. Check to make sure your PCV valve hose is not cracked or leaking and your PCV valve is working properly. They might have pulled a vacuum hose cracking it when it was being checked for smog.

P0522 - Engine Oil Pressure Sensor voltage low:

Possible Causes:

1. 5 volt supply circuit is open or is shorted to ground
2. Oil pressure Sensor signal circuit is shorted to ground or to sensor ground
3. Oil pressure Sensor is damaged or has failed
4. PCM has failed

Your Camshaft or Crankshaft sensor (5 volt line) might be shorting to ground. I would suggest you remove the wire going to the camshaft sensor and try starting the engine without the wire connected.

P0622 - Generator Field Not Switching

Possible causes:

1. Battery charge
2. Faulty Generator
3. Generator harness is open or shorted
4. Generator circuit poor electrical connection
5. Faulty ECM

Thanks Guys,

I will look into it more tomorrow when it's daylight.

Steve, I didn't have time to pull the intake and check all of the plugs for spark but #1 and #4 do.

Good suggestions so far.

Is the fuel pump "buzzing" when you turn the key to run? People have me deathly afraid of old gas, but March isn't so long.

Very small update

I checked the battery - 12.74 volts

Hooked up jumper cable and it still turns over very slowly.

Cleaned the grounds and there was no change.

Unplugged the cam sensor - no change

Fuel pump sounds like it's working. I don't have a pressure gauge to check it. Might try to rent one from Auto Zone tomorrow.

And surprise! It is no longer throwing any codes. I didn't disconnect the battery so....

I'll have more time to play with it tomorrow.

Thanks again for the help
