Default Power Steering Pump-not the usual issue

Hi there, I have what I thought was a common problem: power steering pump makes straining, grinding sound, fluid leaks out. I've seen countless references to the same symptoms and a very common recommendation of cleaning out the screen inside the reservoir. However, I've checked and flow through the reservoir screen is fine.

Here's what happens:
1. I fill the reservoir
2. Start the engine. Pump sounds a little noisy but not too bad.
3. Turn the steering wheel a bit
4. Pump starts straining and grinding.
5. PS fluid sprays out from the pump; leaking out around the nut holding in the high-pressure outflow tube. Clearly the seal went out at some point after the straining noise started to happen.
6. If I leave the engine running, the fluid empties itself completely in no more than five minutes!

However, even while this is happening, if I take the lid off the reservoir and look inside, I can see that at least a little bit of fluid is flowing back in. So the system isn't completely clogged.

It seems like whatever is causing this, it's after the valve, I think that makes sense as to why it doesn't do anything before I turn the wheel.

Other than that, I have no idea what to do, though. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

-David

What fluid are you using
How full do you fill the tank

Step one is to fix the leak, The pressure outlet hose will have an o ring on it. The pressure fitting in the pump also has an o ring but this isn't a common leak point regardless of the brand of car.

The noise you are getting is air in the fluid, this won't stop until you fix the leak, fill the system then go through a run , turn steering wheel, off for 5 min , run, turn wheel, then off for 5 min.
