Default Rad Fan Question

I've noticed several times since buying the Cruiser, that the cooling fan cycles way too much....

it kicks in....runs for about 4-5 seconds.... kicks out...nothing for a few seconds...repeat...over and over...

I haven't dug into it to see if it's the rad fan or condenser fan, but either way, it cycles way too much for my liking.

My first guess is a weak relay....second guess is a faulty cooling temp. sensor..

Anyone have any experience with a similar issue?

What year / trans / turbo or not?

Some had 1 speed and others 2 speed fan. Also, 06+ had a different control system.

Does it do it when the heat is off and the knob is set to floor?

I ask because the car will use AC if it is even partially set to defrost. Defrost activates AC, even with temp set to warm. AC will turn the fan on. If the AC is low on freon, the AC will cycle on and off, as will the fan, and it could possibly do what you describe

it's normal... if there are only two fan speeds, the computer cycles on and off its power to control the temperature at a certain set point. this is known as ON-OFF control.

on the 2003 PT there is a variable speed fan and so the control scheme can ramp up or down the speed in order to precisely control the measured variable, through proportional integral control.

Could be related to pressure in AC system
Cycling is normal for the fan, mine did the same

i'm with this 100%. when the refrigerant is just ssssslightly low they kick on and off like you describe, and that's why it was brought up. if you add JUST ENOUGH r134a from a refill kit to make it stop cycling, you'll be all good. don't overfill it. don't look at the gauge on the can, just add enough to make it stop cycling. i'm assuming you already knew that though and just didn't think to blame the ac in winter
