Default Trans wonders

So 5speed is leaking......
Previous owner had got it rebuilt. I donít think they changed the input shaft bearing/seal and itís also leaking very badly from the case halves.
I decided to check the level and found out it was very low (3qts low) pretty much empty so I know the bearings are shot. I can hear them kinda loudly imo.

So my questions are
should I rebuild it?
should I swap to a GT one?
Is there a difference from the n/a to gt 5speed?
Does your 5 speed make noise?

I tried doing some reading but couldnt really find anything specific

A real rebuild on a low oil trans can get expensive if you want to get rid of worn gears. Have a look on car-part.com , this is a nation wide search of participating salvage yards. Call the yard directly as most don't reply to e mail.

i changed the input bearing cartridge in mine. the hardest part was finding it. it's part number "SKF FC67560". if you buy it, call and have them verify it's in stock before paying.

i would open the trans and inspect it before replacing it. maybe it's something dumb, like you ground the little shift pad forks off due to no lube.

they're a fairly simple trans to play with. see mine here: i killed it.
here is the nvt350 service manual: ftp://oskin.ru/pub/chrysler-dodge/ma...8F_NV_T350.pdf

mine made a weird whirring sound from time to time for a second or so after i would take it out of gear. not gear noise, not rpm dependent, not something i could ever identify, or anything that ever caused an issue

realistically, it's a 2003 pt cruiser. i would just fix the leaks and rock it, unless you're hearing some scary and impending doom kinda noises, like whining gears that get louder by the day

the car doesn't really have enough power to benefit from the limited slip. mine spun both tires without it.

the GT trans is rarer(hard to find) and more expensive. the GT with a manual trans MIGHT have differently splined axles

i would get a stock replacement, or sell the car and snag a GT to play with

3 quarts low?

Manual Transmission, A578 (5-SPD)..........5.1 pints

That's only 2.55 quarts total capacity.

there was someone smarter than me that informed us of a difference with the speedometer speed sensor. he solved it, but you will likely never have a working speedometer again if you switch. read here and the two posts after it. Splicing manual speed sensor on an auto harness

basically it seems if you simply convert the wiring over, your speedometer will read 120 when you are going 10mph

I don't know where you are, but I've got a complete "parts" 5-speed in my garage that's going on the next scrap load.

I'm in Central Ohio...
