Default 2006 pt cruiser. P1697 code

Ok. I am back again. This time with a new and improved pt cruiser. I upgraded from a 2005 to a 2006 non turbo 2.4 ltre cruiser. Issue. I am having some problems where it will run in limp mode, and was throwing some a p700 code. Someone suggested a new PCM. So I got one. In the new PCM I am getting a code of p1697 (SRI) mileage not stored. And it can't be cleared. The vendor where I ordered it said he did program the pcm. I sent it back for a reprogram, and am still getting the same code. Is there something else that would cause this code besides programming?

Who is the vendor where you are getting the PCM from?

I got the pcm from ebay. He is saying to make sure all fuses are good as the program needs to run through the whole system.

I believe the mileage is stored in both the BCM and PCM but they both get the mileage signal independently.

The mileage is stored separately in both the cluster and PCM. The mileage in the PCM is never shown on the dash. In newer vehicles it is used for flashing a message on the dash to tell you a particular service needs to be performed. SRI = Service Reminder Indicator. In our cars, even with the more advanced CAN programming in the second gen cars, it is serves little purpose. That said, I don't know how it is possible to not set the mileage in the PCM. No fuse or wiring is going to affect this. It is stored inside the PCM. I think the PCM is defective.

It is probably too late since you have already sent the computer back once, otherwise you could ask the seller to show you a screenshot of the programming. I always send pictures of the programming so the customer knows that the mileage and VIN programming were completed.

I think it was probably a bit hasty of you to assume the PCM was defective simply from the generic P0700 code. You need someone with a code reader to do a scan and tell you what the real trans codes are. 0700 is a generic code to indicate an issue. There will be more codes stored that you need an advanced code reader to see what they are.

Send that defective computer back and find someone to read the codes on your original computer. It's not impossible for the built in TCM to be defective, but pretty unlikely in my opinion. Usually the ECM side is the one that fails first.

Also after replacing the PCM, you may have to take your PT to a shop to have the Quick Learn procedure programmed into it:

This is from the Service Manual:

A specialty transmission shop may be able to do it, or the dealership and typical charge is around $100.

Note: I replaced my PCM, Skim module in my 06, Ignition Cyl with key fob because my cruiser would not start, got on off of Ebay and it was not advertised as rebuilt, reprogrammed..
I had no programming done after the install, it ran with no codes.

Hopefully the list SW won't make this copy paste unreadable.

Basically, a scan tool needs to repeatedly test the SRI memory to force a write or confirm the PCM is bad.

P1697-EMR (SRI) MILEAGE NOT STORED
For a complete wiring diagram Refer to Section 8W.

When Monitored: Continuously with the ignition on.

Set Condition: An attempt to program/write to the internal EEPROM failed, Also checks at powerdown. One Trip Fault. Three
good trips to turn off the MIL.

Possible Causes
PCM

Always perform the Pre-Diagnostic Troubleshooting procedure before proceeding. (Refer to 9 - ENGINE -
DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING).

Diagnostic Test

1. SCAN TOOL DISPLAYS A WRITE FAILURE

With a scan tool, perform the SRI Memory Test.

Does scan tool display Write Failure?

Yes >> Replace and program the Powertrain Control Module per Service Information.
Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. (Refer to 9 - ENGINE - STANDARD PROCEDURE)

No >> Go To 2

2. SCAN TOOL DISPLAYS A WRITE REFUSED

With the a scan tool, perform the SRI Memory Test.
Does the scan tool display Write Refused?

Yes >> Go To 3

No >> Go To 4

3. PCM REFUSED 2ND TEST
With a scan tool, perform the SRI Memory Test a third time.
NOTE: Retest the SRI Memory two more times.
Does the scan tool display Write Refused again?

Yes >> Replace and program the Powertrain Control Module per Service Information.
Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. (Refer to 9 - ENGINE - STANDARD PROCEDURE)

No >> Test Complete.

4. SCAN TOOL DISPLAYS SRI MILEAGE INVALID
With a scan tool, perform the SRI Memory Test.
Does the scan tool display SRI Mileage Invalid?

Yes >> Update the mileage and retest the SRI Memory.
Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. (Refer to 9 - ENGINE - STANDARD PROCEDURE)

No >> Go To 5
9 - 514 ENGINE ELECTRICAL DIAGNOSTICS PT

5. COMPARE SRI MILEAGE WITH ODOMETER
Compare the SRI Mileage stored with the Instrument Panel Odometer.
Is the mileage within the specified range displayed on the scan tool?

Yes >> Test Complete.

No >> Update the mileage and retest the SRI Memory.
Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. (Refer to 9 - ENGINE - STANDARD PROCEDURE)
