Default 05 Start / run issues

Just the other day my 05 did something weird. It started ran 15 seconds and died. It did this two or three times and then ran fine. Yesterday it did the same thing. Today it wont start.

I turn the key, dashboard lights come on, car will not turn over. I can hear the fuel pump cycle on but that's it. No drain on the engine voltage. Checked power at the solenoid - nothing. I can jump the starter at the solenoid and the starter turns but the car will not start up.

So what do you think it might be?

Does the red security light stay on when you are trying to start the engine?

Is the engine light on? If so what codes?

No there are no engine codes. Not sure what the security light is. Mine doe snot have a chipped key or security system.

I went to try it again and it started. Idled it for ten minutes. Turned it of and tried to start it again and it started up but only ran for 10 seconds. Tried six time more, turned fin but only runs for 10 seconds. then it stopped turning at all again.

ARG....

I think if it were mine, I'd check the fuel pressure. Sounds like the pump is dying to me.

Once the engine runs past 3 seconds, a factory anti theft system won't shut the car down. If you have an aftermarket system only way to tell is look up the system. If we are talking about the 06 in your signature, it is probably going to have a chip key / anti theft. If 05, I don't know for sure. ( remote entry does not = chip key as plain looking keys can be chipped )

The first thing to check would be the underhood grounds, there are about 30 wires across 3 points. Have a look at the posts on page 9 Embarassing question I have to ask because I made a huge error

Could be fuel pump, could be crankshaft sensor , could be ignition switch. Pull codes from the engine computer, record them, clear then record them after it stalls.

No chip key - no security installed.

Would the fuel pump keep it from turning over?

I would suggest a battery load test to make sure the battery voltage is not dropping after getting it running.

Steve, I will. Though I am pretty sure that is not the case otherwise the crank issue would not be intermittent. Just to clarify -
it will cycle thru the following conditions without any particular order :
- no crank [no load on the battery or power to the solenoid]
-crank and no start
-crank , start, run ten seconds and shut off
-run fine

I would think there needs to be an electrical component failing that is the only thing I can think of that would be intermittent like a sensor or a relay or maybe ignition switch.

has no one had this occur to them?

With no codes being triggered I am suggesting the PCM is not communicating with the other modules when it fails to start. If the battery load test checks out good I would suggest checking all the plugs going to the PCM. Check to make sure no pins are bent and inspect all sockets on the PCM.

Still no codes. Could not get the car to turn over. No load on the battery while turning key. This time I held the key turned for a bout 10 seconds and then it cranked and started up. Ran fine for several minutes. Turned it of tried to restart it and no crank again....

Checked the battery with a load meter and it is fine.
