Default Silencers?

I have heard people talking about silencers under the hood, a white and a black one if my memory serves. What are they? I take it they silence the noise of the car. What do you have to do to remove these? Will it hurt the car? Do you have to get another part to put in its place, or just remove it? Thanks for the help.

It doesnt hurt the car at all, it helps it breathe better. On the top right of the site, find search. Go to it, and search for silencer removal. Some people have detailed descriptions of how to do it with pictures. Definitely go do it, its worthwhile.

My 2003 Touring (non turbo) only had the one white silencer in the top of the airbox.

Removing it gave the engine a neat little growl, and slightly improved the MPG.
