Are you following the correct belt routing? You should have to release the tension-eer to to get the correct tension on the belt.

Take a look at the alignment of the belt with respect to the pulley and the harmonic balancer (crankshaft pulley) and the p/s pump pulley. The belt should be captured between the walls of the crankshaft pulley and the p/s pump pulley (and A/C pump pulley if you have A/C) and is only riding along on the idler pulley which should be self-centering.

JoeX is correct, you use a wrench on the pulley center bolt to pull the idler pulley up, slide the belt under it, then release the pulley so that it puts tension on the belt.



This isn't a great shot, but look between 0:12 and 0:20 to see it running

one time i didn't observe the correct belt routing, the belt was too tight and it self-destructed
double check pulley alignment and belt installation

I figured it out thanks guys. The harmonic balancer was seared all the way against the crank. Now it runs great
